I guess you could say that other than putting 32's on my new 89' FJ62, this would be the first mod (sort of...). Anyone running one of these? And what changes did you see WRT gas milage, HP, so on....I figured if a FRAM was $14 a pop (I live in Maine and the sand on the roads in the winter in hard on the air filters), the K&N pays for itself in 3 FRAMS.....Thoughts or is it just a gimmick?

Not great on our cruisers.

Take a look at a WIX filter and a K&N side by side, there is MUCH more filter material in a WIX brand, more filter material equals better air cleaning.

You make the call.

You'll hear a million opinions on this one. Use Search, this has been rehashed many times.

People don't like how oil gets sucked in with air. People don't like how there's less filter area. People think they let too much dirt in. People also think they give you more horses or better fuel efficency.

I used to live in Central America where filters and parts are hard to find. It was nice to be able to just wash and oil the K&N instead of carrying multiple spare paper filters or searching for parts. In this situation I'd recommend one, in others I don't know.

Are we talking about air filters or oil filters? I tried an oiled foam air filter for a while. I didn't notice any improvement in power or gas milage. I hated cleaning it so I finally went back to paper filters.

Thanks for the info, I think I will be using a high quality paper filter....we have lots of dust and sand kicked up on the main roads, never mind going wheeling...and the couple of extra bucks saved here don't mean anything if the motor quits.....

thanks

There are alot of opinions on this subject and it come down to how you are going to drive your cruiser. I have heard no hard facts on which is better. I personally think which ever way you go if you maintain the filters you will not notice any difference on hurting your engine life.

Check out the K&N homepage. It has a writeup talking about how they work and why they are just as good or better than paper filters.

I run a TRD oiled air filter. They have the same surface area as the OEM paper filter but are cleanable. The K&N are apparently smaller. IF you go K&N I'd make sure the filter area is equivalent.

yeah, tricky one...and I have a K&N

I think about all these factors alot, and I have one on mine. I noticed 'maybe' 1-2 MPG improvement, but could be driving habits, for sure. Since I have probably read too many posts on 'mud', I may be an "autochondriac", I think that more and possibly bigger particulates may pass through, makes sense, right? - I just change my oil a little early. Maybe at 2500 mi. or even at 2000 mi. if I've been on dusty CO roads...FWIW I clean the air filter maybe twice a year(?)

Tough one for sure...I guess it comes down to use of your Cruiser, location and preference. (that helps, huh?)

hmm...I've had the K&N for a long time, I'll switch to the paper filters for a while and check back in to see if there are any short-term results...it couldn't hurt, that's for sure. I'm pretty good at keeping track of MPG, etc. But the long-term...>?>>?

cruiser_guy, I'm curious about the TRD oiled filter...is this "same but different" as the K&N? but TOYOTA?

K&N is the worst mod you can do.
It is a waste of money.
They suck.
Oh.... wait, it isn't even a mod IMOP.

I will say it again; I find it funny when people list these POS filters as a mod.

Spend your money on better things.

I guess you see what I think about K&N.

It's a gimmick!!!!!!!!!!

The money will be better spent on increasing gas prices.

If you haven't gone to them yet, take a look on the walls of the intake *after* the filter. Then go with a K&N and drive her a few months. Take a look at the walls again.

Put it in the vette and the beamer, not the cruiser.

filters

The K&N is supposed to filter better as it gets dirty. Of course then your air flow is comparable to a paper filter I suppose. I personally have less need for 1.21 horspower more than I do for a reliable long lasting engine. You can see the dirt usually in the intake if you run one long enough. K&N is a gimmick for the most part. I use them on a street/strip motorcycle though. Never would use one in the dirt.

Actually- I do have a K&N air filter both of my Land Cruisers. But, I'm using them as diff breathers. Does that count?

it's kinda funny

how so many people are ripping on the k&n air filter, it's a proven fact that they increase air flow.look at most of your off road racers and any performance engine, most will have some form of a k&n or a knock off copy of the k&n design. i've worked in the auto industry for over 20 years, we sell some sort of k&n product, be it a high flow intake set-up or a drop-in air filter at least once a week.as far as cruisers are concerned,i run a drop-in in my 69 40,and my 84 60,clean them about once a year,no big deal. i buy the cleaner by the gallon.you may not see any performance gain in a stock motor, but i feel it's a far superior filter than most paper filters.now if you look at a factory toyota air filter, thats the only other filter i would use. it has a three stage filter element, and its more like a gauze material than paper. all my nissan and infiniti air filters are oiled filters, some sort of paper/fiber material.more than my .02. carry on! :D

Lots of different opinions of this. Personally, I'm happy with my Aircharger. Then again, I don't live in a very dusty area.

I didn't do the actual comparison, that was done by "Stone" on the international forum. He posted a photo of the stock paper filter, the TRD oiled filter and the K&N filter. The TRD and OEM paper filter were the same physical size and a similar number of pleats but the K&N were smaller in size. These comparisons were done for the 3B which uses the same filter as the F engine (the 2F uses an oblong filter).

The TRD may be made by K&N, I don't know for sure but the K&N filter recommended is NOT the same size as the TRD.

TRD = Toyota Racing Development

One word of caution ...

If you are using a K&N or cleanable filter be caerful when you re-oil the filter. To much oil on the filter and the oil may affect the mass air flow sensor if the vehicle is so equiped.
