K&N...Worth It???? (1 Viewer)

My biggest reason to have a K/N is the fact that we live and drive dirt roads everyday - I plug a filter up in about three weeks - so for that justification only - I run K/N on the 1ton Dodge, the 60 w/350tbi and the 40 w/350....More power? when they are fresh and clean it increases airflow - on my Taco I always found that the mass airflow sensor got oil on it then picked up dust and finally the engine light came on - pain - but better than buying filters -

I'm generous when I reoil because that does most of the dust collecting but then I drive an oil burner (diesel) so there is NO mass air flow sensor or any other crap on the engine to get fouled.
Things aren't really clean here in Central America either with the dirt roads, dry season, polluting trucks and buses, burning fields etc. etc.

Some comparison pics of

1) Top = Toyota paper washable #17801-61030
2) Bottom left = K&N Oil
3) Bottom right = Toyota TRD oiled

The numbering doesn't match the filters.
The yellow/white one on the left is a toyota/denso item. They are washable.

My K&N is sitting around waiting to be used as a pre-filter if I ever get around to building a snorkel.

how so many people are ripping on the k&n air filter, it's a proven fact that they increase air flow.look at most of your off road racers and any performance engine, most will have some form of a k&n or a knock off copy of the k&n design. i've worked in the auto industry for over 20 years, we sell some sort of k&n product, be it a high flow intake set-up or a drop-in air filter at least once a week.as far as cruisers are concerned,i run a drop-in in my 69 40,and my 84 60,clean them about once a year,no big deal. i buy the cleaner by the gallon.you may not see any performance gain in a stock motor, but i feel it's a far superior filter than most paper filters.now if you look at a factory toyota air filter, thats the only other filter i would use. it has a three stage filter element, and its more like a gauze material than paper. all my nissan and infiniti air filters are oiled filters, some sort of paper/fiber material.more than my .02. carry on! :D

Most off road racers use a dry venturi type filter. Silt kills K&N's in the dirt.

Street is a lot more forgiving. And yes, they do increase airflow when clean...

Quick test, head to moab with a fresh, clean K&N.
Go run some of the dusty trails.
Open the filter afterwards.

On mine, there was a TON of dust tracks past the K&N.

I will only run paper.

Or the AEM washable dry elements.. Those things are trick...

Amen. The ONE time I ran oil in the filter it was a horrible mess after a trail run. And the oil getting into the sensers scared me a little.

BTW, sand sails right through K&N's as well..

Im not getting rid of my K&N but i didnt get any gains and im sure im getting more contamination in the oil. Ive never noticed any dirt past the filter in the intake tract though so its no big deal.

K&N & FJ62 Didn't Mix . . .

. . . for me, at least.

The first time I had the valves adjusted after switching to a K&N filter in my FJ62, the mechanic asked if I'd gotten lazy about changing the oil.

Took a look in the air cleaner & there was dust within the area the filter should be protecting. Came to the conclusion that just because the same K&N fits Fs & 3FEs, does not mean the filter housings are identical. Believe the top & bottom seals in the air cleaner don't mate perfectly with the K&N.

K&N sells a filter grease. Might be the trick to sealing one in an FJ62 air cleaner housing. Or you could add a rubber weatherstrip to get a seal.

Or use OEM, like I now do.
