Well, the newest addition has been added to the GX. I’ve got 255/70/18 KO2s on stock wheels and didn’t want to deal with a deflated spare under the GX, the cost of a full bumper, or the looks of something like the RIGd carrier. This thing is stout with zero wiggle and definitely helps with moving away from the mommy mobile vibes. Thanks to the JW team for getting me in on a Saturday.

Painting the stock spare to match.

I have the taillight overlays I’ve got to get on, need to figure out what to do with the chrome, then it’s on to sliders. I really like the DV8 ones that haven’t been released and Ronin which aren’t being made currently.

Keep an eye on the area in red. I recently saw a gx with this carrier and the carrier had torn through the sheet metal of the door. Not sure of the circumstances behind it, but it’s not an easy fix.

The killer would be extreme wash board roads. If you find yourself on a wash board road, go slow and try to avoid the heavy bouncing.

I have the JW offroad tire carrier and and its greet but after some wash board roads to a trail the metal tore and made the most awful noise while driving , I temporarily put in a screw and epoxy to help subside the noise ,

Do you mind posting some pictures? I just got the carrier myself and I wanted to see what I should watch out for.

I once saw a Jeep with an oversize tire mounted on an unreinfored door. He got away with it by making a little "diving board" sticking out of the rear bumper that would ever so slightly lift the rear tire up as you slammed the door, and support much of it's weight. This takes the load off the sheetmetal when driving rough roads. Just be sure to round it off so you don't hurt yourself on it. I imagine you'd have to have some way to adjust it as the tire wears, too...like having it bolted on and lifting it up with another layer of sheetmetal or some washers every now and then. It'd be nice if that carrier held the tire a little closer to the door, but I suppose it's sized to carry 12.5" tires

If you look at the picture above, this is what JW does. There is a little ramp that the carrier slides up onto.

Does the JW still tear the sheet metal after the little ramp was added? I thought they added it later?

I think that "ramp" does more to support the door and hinges than anything, though IIRC there is a bracket that wraps around the bottom edge of the door and ties to the bottom door skin attachment point so that might help some.

Mine shows no signs of tearing the sheet metal at all, but it has been less than a year. By the end of summer I should have a pretty good idea if it is going to hold up, as I have several wheeling trips planned so far.

I've had mine for a couple of years or so now and no issues whatsoever. I haven't encountered anyone with substantiated (with pictures) issues with tearing sheet metal with the carrier yet. Although, i have heard of folks with stories of failures but they either don't respond when I ping them for more info or provide pictures of the problem. Im not saying it didnt happen, but itd be great if people could actually share info/pics of the issues they have with their carriers.

However, I am mindful to not let the door swing open and I walk the door close before slamming it shut. Probably more importantly, I'm not running a big wheel/tire setup. It works for me but ymmv.

Recently installed JW carrier on my GX before a trip to Ouray in late July. Install is a bear. Getting the holes drilled, bolts threaded onto the nuts and tightened (triple checking everything, painting bare metal, completing the wiring & license plate mount) took over 10 hrs. Overall I am happy. Spare is accessible, does not obscure rear view, door shuts perfectly after shimming, zero bounce or squeaks even on high speed washboard, huggs nice and tight to the door. Plus it looks tuff. Completed the center camera mount and DIY license plate mount on the door post Ouray trip, takes extra work but completely worth it. Tire is 265/70R17 E rated on a steelie.

Great pic's, but you know you're on a GX"460" forum and not the GX"470".
