If you are going down from Mt. Ord the back way (FR27), there used to be an interchange with the Beeline Highway (SR87). Since they did more work on Beeline, this has been somewhat obscured, but a conenction still exists. From Beeline, it looks like there is a fence. However, I checked it out today, and it is a barbed wire fence like a cattle fence - meaning, you can open and close it. Apparently, some grading has been done on FR27, at least in the lower part, and there was a sign not to enter the wash. I saw a pretty new Jeep Wrangler (or whatever the things that replaced the Cherokees are called now) today trying to cross the dry wash - it didn't have water yet although this was in a heavy downpour. He didn't seem much experienced and got himself stuck several times (for no apparent reason), but since neither driver nor passenger got out to spot, I didn't feel like getting drenched, either.
And it would have been at least a 5 minute walk since I was only in a lowly Nissan Sentra rental car (talk about underpowered
). No idea what came of them - being in a wash in a thunderstrom is not a good thing
Anyway, one of these days, Michael and I will do the Mt. Ord trip again, official road up, FR27 down - which was one of the very early 4-wheeling trips we took in AZ (in the Eagle Summit = Mitsubishi Expo no less ;p). It should be doable for stockers, I'll post when we go.
