Here she is!

cruiser0066bw.jpg

Stock 3.8, what looks to be headers on it, stock axles, small SuperLift on it (too stiff, taking it out for a better flexing lift), Ramsey Pro Plus 9000lb winch, front and rear heater, Bestop soft top, 4 point harnesses, full cage, stock 3 on the floor, brand new brakes(master cylinders, slaves and shoes) all around, 33" BFG AT's, Crane ignition system, etc etc.

I'm liking her so far! Can't wait to get it registered this week! She runs and drives!

Needs a cleaning of the carb/new gas, the ebrake to be adjusted(on the T-case, it's new to me, shouldn't be too hard to resolve) and then just hit it with a bit of paint.

Sorry, It's a '72.

Anyone care to enlighten me on what knobs do what on the dash? I know about the windshield wipers, choke and lights. One looks like a throttle and a couple more have an H on them and another has an upside down V. ?????

Nice looking rig. The two H knobs are for front and rear Heaters. The upside down V knob is upside down. It is for the Vent (cowl air inlet in fornt of windshild.)

The "throttle" knob is for either a manual choke or manul throttle.

HTH, Blake

There is a choke knob as well as the other knob I was mentioning. After some chasing I found that it is a manual throttle. Pretty handy if you ask me!

Where do you guys get your carb rebuild kits from? The accl pump is awefully slow and it feels like she is running way to lean. Also, she has an electronic fuel pump on her right now, if I rebuild the carb, won't I be able to rid myself of it? Is the stock carb built with a pump inside it? It is quite loud when running the engine since it is mounted to the firewall.

'73's a good year, but what year isn't? Didn't know Superlift made a kit for 40's - you mean Skyjacker? Been down that road with leafs. Daily driver? What's your budget for a lift & do you have good fab skills? I say don't waste time with leafs & link it out! Better flex & ground clearance but also more expensive & time consuming to build. Have fun with the build!

looks good! and yeah more pics.

Pics to come tonight, it's been raining here in NE for nearly a week straight.

It's a '72, not a '73, my mistake!

What would you guys recommend for a lift? I don't think I want to turn this into as much a project as my '87 samurai. A nice 4" lift with some actual flex instead of the rock hard leaf packs that are on there right now would be a great start for me.

Also, can anyone recommend a specific brand of carb kit? I can do it myself so shipping it out is not something I feel is necessary. I am just looking for a complete kit.

I also have spare 30 spline axles for the front and a disc brake setup front end with 30 splines if I want it. Should I bother converting? I'd like to toss a couple Lockrites in there and they only come in 30 spline afaik.

What else would I want to grab off a pre-'72 FJ pickup with a 3 on the tree and a bad body? It's just going to get scrapped so I'd rather vulcher it before that happens.

I'll get into more q's about transfer case/tranny/gearing options shortly.

She looks decent, but some rust has been repaired (but not toobad for the $$$) and the frame was fixed in the rear. Everything looks decent now and she is a solid runner.

Killer!

I like the look of that Cruiser.

We know. You said that.

awesome !!
Congrats on the purchase....looks great !!
Go for nothing other than OME for a simple 2.5 lift, wheeled last week with a stocker FJ40 up carnage canyon with a simple 2.5 ome lift no lockers....thing was un stoppable, short wheel base did better in some spots than my fully equipped rock crawler...whish I had some pics of that day !!

Good luck & BIG O'LL :flipoff2: Welcome....

P.S. take off that Powered by TOYOTA and replace it with a IH8MUD decal and buy a star......!!!!!

How about use the springs off of your parts rig for a SOA. If you want to get rid of any parts from your parts rig let me know. I just live a few towns west of you. Albee

I think for now I'm going to concentrate on getting PS in it (already got a toyota '85 ps box lined up), getting the carb rebuilt (just ordered a rebuild from CCOT) and getting the ebrake working. I'll hopefully have it registered later today depending on how carbonation goes at work (working at a brewery is fun, but lots of hours/work, it's worth it).

I'm going to talk to the guy about the FJ for parts. If I can sell my Samurai sooner than later, I may just have to make him an offer on the whole thing.

Good looking rig! For a carb kit I would go with FJ40Jim's (fj40jim@aol.com). He's a regular on here and I have used his rebuild kit for my '76. It's a little bit more expensive than from some of the vendors but his price includes shipping (or used to a couple of years ago) but most important his kit inlcudes stuff like the secondary throttle diaphragm (maybe not a part on your '72 if it's a stock carb) and a float that aren't included in typical kits.

I had already ordered a kit from CCOT when I saw your post. Maybe next time!

She's being put on the road tomorrow or Friday. Carb kit comes in Monday.

Looks great - welcome!

Keep us updated on your upgrades.

Update!

So it's been a little over a month. I'm pretty pleased with my "progress" so far considering all the other things I've been doing as well as trying to keep up with the FJ.

Replaced:

-Speedo Cable (then broke, faultly, then CCOT sent me the wrong replacement, gotta send it back)

-Gas tank: new poly tank. Works well, but currently the vehicle has a Carter electric fuel pump and NO return line. I think I really need to do something about this but haven't dove into the whole "so where does this return line come off the carb...." issue. I'll get there. Also the "new" fuel sending unit that came with my tank from CCOT reads WAY off (as in 3/4 on the guage = bone dry). You could have asked me how I knew while I was on the side of the road for an hour. First time EVER being stranded in a motorized vehicle. Arg....

-Windsheid wipers (mmm, easy)

-Centering pin: I haven't found a definitive answer to this after searching, but how far down should the large threaded cap go down into the housing? Looks like my new one only goes in about 1/2 while the used one was all the way threaded. I'm guessing that's the adjustment but since it's steering, I want to make sure.

- Tie rods: Lots of grunting, lots of bloody knuckles, but I think I got the toe-in correct. Just a HAIR toed in and it seems to drive with less wander than before. Still a little slop in the steering box, but eh, what can ya do?

- Carb rebuilt: Seems to work well, but doesn't run smooth at all. Also has a bit of a flat spot right off idle. Once in a while it will "skip" as in hesitate/not fire for a split second. It feels like she's running lean. It has headers on it, not sure what kind, but am I wrong in assuming it should be jetted slightly richer due to this?

-Checked timing: Was pretty retarded (no pun intended). Got it set correctly on the flywheel. Problem is that I have a Crane X7000 or whatever electronic ignition. When I phased the rotor it didn't run as well anymore. Who knows....I think I still am off but I can't get it back. I'd like to see if my advance is working, but that will be the next free day I have. Start motocycle racing next weekend so it may be a while before I get back to her.

-Adjusted valves: Holy TIGHT batman! Most of the valves were out of spec on the tight side. Loosened them up. Still no TACK TACK TACK but they are closer to being in spec.

-Lubed: Changed out the rear diff fluid. She was milky. Thank you water! I'll have to run the diff breather up high just like I did on my Taco. Not yet though, she won't see water until I can get her to run RIGHT.

-Ebrake: I have the rebuild kit, just gotta put it in. I figured I'd wait to change the transfer case fluid when I do the ebrake since I'll be putting the new seal in anyways.

-Clutch: Flushed the fluid. Smoother at the pedal now that the tar/molasses wasn't in place of brake fluid. She still chatters when starting out in 1st from a standing start. I think my rear main seal is leaking slowly since she does slip every now and again. Add it to the list once I finally make a decision on what tranny/gearing I'll be doing in her.

-Plugs: Changed them. Gapped the new ones. Old plugs were healthy/tan. Nothing more to add....(gasp!)

So she is registered, driving and enjoyable. Still WAY too stiff but after doing a bit more reading, SOA sounds better and better. I found a link to a company that sells pre-turned axles on here and I like that idea. I'm not an accomplished welder and have a set of stock springs to use if necessary. One of my friends who knows his s*** with suspension is recommending I try some longer shackles first. I have stock/short shackles on there currently. Opinions?

Engine still runs rough. Our head brewer at work has a '74 with the same carb/engine as me and his runs like butter compared to mine. Doesn't necessarily accelerate faster but runs infinitly smoother and has better throttle response. Mine has almost a delay to it. I want his engine!!!!!!

My carb linkage is pretty micky mouse. The throttle cable actually does a 270 coming out of the firewall into the throttle arm. Anyone have a picture of what a correct throttle linkage looks like? Something just ain't right and it makes my pedal REALLY heavy.

I also don't think my secondary is working. The weighted butterfly doesn't open when I WOT rev it in nuetral (not tackin it out, short bursts just trying to get enough vacuum). I would imagine it would take being under load to work with steady throttle input, but I'm not thinking it's working. Just doesn't seem to have enough nut....

Anyone local want some free beer in exchange for an afternoon of your expertise? I'm in north central MA. Did I mention I work for a brewery?
