-Gas tank: new poly tank. Works well, but currently the vehicle has a Carter electric fuel pump and NO return line. I think I really need to do something about this but haven't dove into the whole "so where does this return line come off the carb...." issue. I'll get there. Also the "new" fuel sending unit that came with my tank from CCOT reads WAY off (as in 3/4 on the guage = bone dry). You could have asked me how I knew while I was on the side of the road for an hour. First time EVER being stranded in a motorized vehicle. Arg....

this is the only thing that caught my attention given all that I have read here on MUD. The decision to use a poly tank. Pretty much every comment I have read here is that they are stinky - in that you can smell the fuel in the cab big time. I guess time will tell if this is an issue for you.

As for the fuel sending unit, are you sure it is a Ohm match to the gauge you are using? I believe that sending unit is after-market and 'may' not mate with your gauge???? I guess it would be odd that they would sell a sending unit in a tank that would not work correct with the factory gauge.. you are using the factory gauge, no?

I would imagine that it would match the load of the factory gauge (yes, stock gauge). I'll have to test it out. Strange thing though: When you first turn on the FJ, it reads normally. Then after a few moments it pegs to way past full. Perhaps something is awry. I have a couple spare stock sending units. The old one worked fine. While I don't mind putting it in, I did get a brand new one and it "should" work.

if I knew the old one worked fine - I would put it in and test it.... if it works rolll with it and sell the other one you got for free :)

what about the fume smell from the poly tank??

What fume smell from the poly tank?

I hope that answers your question ;)

No smell at all. Of course I am running a soft top and mostly run soft doors if any.

yeah? report back in Nov-Dec when you put the top and doors back on when winter comes to MA :)

but seriously.... got to reading back some posts on poly tanks and this one by Trollhole https://forum.ih8mud.com/showpost.php?p=1050057&postcount=7 kind of tipped me off to thinking I wonder if the misreading on your gauge is becuase the sending unit is calibrated to work with a certan depth tank and those after market tanks are smaller?

it says at CCOT that "FYI: Replica and OEM tanks hold 16.4 US gallons of gas.
Poly tank holds 12.5 US gallons of gas."

so I wonder if there is your issue on the misreading....

I'd have to buy a hard top before I was able to put one on, and I don't see that happening :D

Odd, this is the fuel sending unit CCOT sent to me included with my purchase of this particular tank. Why would they make a special deal like this?: "tank+sending unit (but the sending unit doesn't work with this tank) only $179!"

I call shenanigans.

Also, from http://coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/gastanfj19th.html

wierd... that same link (first Add to Cart item) clearly has that quote about the poly tank being 12.5 gallons... a bit of a contradiction I agree to the first opening product details you list.

but, even at 15 gallons (not sure which of their own descriptions to believe) that is 1.4 gallons smaller than a stock... and I wonder then if they just give you a sending unit off the shelf that is more designed for a stock 16.4 tank or some sort of 'special' poly tank sending unit that is calibrated for a smaller tank... I highly doubt that though.. so logic says they give a general off the shelf sending unit.

not sure then.. just trying to help torubleshoot as not having accurate fuel readings suck and there certainly seems to be some contradictions and wierdness here...

good luck... post up when/if you discover the issue.
