Hi everybody,

This past weekend I picked up a 2016 Black on Black Land Cruiser. I have been reading some posts here and trying to get as much info as possible. I have read through over 400 pages of the owners manual, entertainment system manual and quick reference guide in an attempt to learn about all of the features and settings this car has. This truck seems to have more buttons and settings than a James Bond vehicle! I had a few questions and was hoping maybe some of you all could help me out. I have searched and read through FAQ's, but after reading hundreds of posts it all seems to turn to mush.

1. Is there Anybody local to the Central Florida area who would be willing to meet with me and go over some common issues or concerns with These 200 series Land Cruisers? The manual and forums help a lot, but sometimes it is nice to just chat with a current owner and get caught up to speed on things to look out for. I can provide Pizza and Beer for your troubles!

2. I have looked through the maintenace schedule to come up with a timeline for how often I am changing things. Please correct me if I am wrong or have missed anything
5k miles = change engine oil and filter, rotate tires
15k miles = Clean cabin air filter in glove box (replace every 30k miles)
5k or 15k miles = lubricate propeller shaft and check torque on bolts
15k miles = change front and rear diff oil
30k miles = replace engine air filter
60k miles = replace auto transmission fluid
120k miles = replace spark plugs
?? miles = replace coolant
?? miles = replace serpentine/drive belt

Am I missing anything

3. Are there any common issues or things to be on the look out for. Every car seems to have its weak points and quirks

4. I want to upgrade to taller tires and smaller wheels. I found the spreadsheet of tire sizes and have an idea of what will fit on stock suspension. Are there any other 17" wheels that fit other than the Tundra TRD rock warrior wheels? The posts I saw were older, maybe somebody came along and made a 17" wheel with the right offset to work on my land cruiser.

Thanks for taking the time to read my long post and reply!

Man congratulations. Such a great vehicle. Do all that stuff and keep meticulous records and you will be rewarded substantially when you sell it on here in the hopefully distant future :)

Congrats, nice truck. I got my 16 last fall, it’s been great. Definitely upgrade the tires. It’ll transform how it rides and handles (and looks) in a positive way. Do the wheels too, if it trips your trigger, but 18’s work just fine.

The current tires have some decent tread left, so I have some time to sort out the wheels. If I dont find some 17" wheels I will just get taller BFG K02's put on the stock 18's.

I figured the 16+ models would age the best. The plan is to either keep it for a really long time and it will be a cool old LC or put 100k miles on it and enjoy some good resale value. eventually I will do a slight lift, taller tires, offroad front buumper and cool roof rack and rear spare mount.

Toyota interval is 10k miles, but you can change sooner.
15k miles = Clean cabin air filter in glove box (replace every 30k miles)
5k or 15k miles = lubricate propeller shaft and check torque on bolts
15k miles = change front and rear diff oil
30k miles = replace engine air filter
By 30k you may need to replace pads or turn rotors.
60k miles = replace auto transmission fluid
120k miles = replace spark plugs
?? miles = replace coolant
?? miles = replace serpentine/drive belt

I replaced the transfer case and F/R diffs at 35k, well ahead of the 60k recommended zone, because it's not too much money and the factory fill will be the dirtiest because of break in. Rear in particular is a piece of cake, you can do it in well under half an hour taking your time. There's a video on here. T-case and Front are more work but not bad at all.

I also replaced the coolant and brake fluid around this time. Good to get these out as they will be corrosive after some years.

Rust Prevention - Use Fluid Film or undercoating
Starter once you get over 100k, though they can sometimes go to 180k
Water Pump over 100k - look for leaks

17">*.*

Your only other choice in 17" is the Fondmetal. They look fine, but considering they are about the same money I would go with Rock Warriors. They are forged instead of cast, well balanced OEM quality wheels.

Thanks for taking the time to read my long post and reply!

Nice!

Scroll down to post #10 in this thread to see how to find and cover with grease the KDSS (kinetic dynamic suspension system) valves. It will be important to have those work if you plan a lift someday.

Congrats man, and welcome.

For maintenance, coolants first exchange is at 100,000 miles. Belts get replaced based on inspection. I personally change my air filter at 15,000 because I change everything based on servers service, which really is what we all drive in anyway.

My parents live in central Florida and I go down every now and then to visit, I'll let you know so we can meet up. They just bought an '18, and are still breaking it in, but we are going to run up to outer banks in a month for that truck maiden wheeling trip.

Congrats and welcome to 'mud!

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody! I appreciate the tips.

Let me know if any of you central Florida folks want to meet up. I would love to pick your brains. I am used to wrenching on sports cars, and this is my first 4x4 off road truck.

You and IndyCole are rig-twins. :)
(That is, before Cole turned his truck into the envy of all!)

You're gonna love that beast.

Welcome!

Is there a build thread for this envy of all rig? I would love some inspiration.

Side note, I thought of a few more questions.

1. Is it possible to play a DVD from the player up front, have it show video in the back, audio through headphones in the back, and the adults up front get to use Bluetooth or radio to hear music? Can this only be done if i use the rear inputs and add a player for the rear? Can i load movies on a usb thumb stick and play them through the rear input?

2. In all my searching it seems like an aftermarket intake is frowned upon. I would like a bit more intake noise, I know I probably won't gain any hp or tq, but don't want to make it worse. Should I get the afe intake or just buy a drop in k&n filter?

3. Any mods I can do to increase mpg's other than lighter rock warrior wheels?

Spend some time (allow a couple weeks ;)) in the forum FAQs. A few posts down (maybe like #7) are build threads of members. Good inspiration, but will lead to a flatter wallet.

200-series FAQ

Also, from your post above, it seems you are planning to use the rear LCD monitors, so disregard my advice to get in on the group buy for the seat hole covers. Your best bet for your RES usage questions is to find a 12 year old and turn them loose. They will have it all figured out in a few minutes.

I would pass on changing the air filter, but then, I am approaching geezerdom so take it for what it's worth. The oiled airfilters will not let your engine live as long as the stock OEM filter will. The truck has 385 hp now, any gains from a filter will be minimal at best and result in zero improvement in fuel economy.

These trucks are heavy beasts with a large profile. Keeping weight off and keeping it as low as possible are really the only mods that "might" result in better economy. Driving conservatively is probably the best choice, along with praying that the wind is at your back.

A diesel swap would probably get you better mileage but falls outside of the mod category in my world.

Enjoy your truck - they are great rig.

I ended up just getting another OEM air filter. After some thought, I didn't want to deal with an oiled filter getting clogged up with dust from off roading.
