an 89 fj62. when it gets warm out and temps under the hood go up. the starter will do nothing. i have no cooling issues. new radiator and cooling fine. i have fuel also. i can jumpstart the truck and it turns over every time. and i have a one yr old starter , alternator and battery. been looking at threads and no 2 issues seem the same. thanks.

might be time for some new batt terminals. also check to make sure conections on batt and starter are clean and tight. heat makes metal expand and also creates resistance. if you got oil and crud all over the starter it can cause this.

Is your carb fan running after the engine is heated up and you shut down?
Are you just getting a click, no noise (dead), what? Or is she trying to turn over and just wont fire up?

I'm thinking battery terminals too. Could be the battery as well.

gregnash- no carb fan on a 62 :)

What kind of parts are on it? OEM? Aftermarket?

Could also be electrical being that it is a 62. I know nothing about them :D

yep. its click and nothing. i had this start even before i replaced the alt. and starter. i did the nuetral switch also. now its more frequently and only do i worry when it gets warmer. i have kinda chased this thing for a while. i carry a jumpstart battery but, eventually would love to figure this out. cleaned posts and looked at wiring. i just suck at electrical .

No carb correct, no manifold fan, incorrect. DS inner fender. Should have a large squirrel cage fan pointed directly at the intake/exhaust manifold. Should run when under hood temps call for it assuming all is correct working order.

fusible links? my 62 has a manifold fan, comes on after I shut it off if it got hot enough to trigger it. check the engine grounds...

"yep. its click and nothing."

What clicks? The solonoid on the starter?

If that is what clicks, then your problem is either a bad cable from the batt to the starter, battery/alternator (higher voltage with jump start), or the connection in the starter that bridges the batt cable to the starter windings when the solonoid picks up.

you should do a load test on the battery

Intermittent click-no start sounds like starter contacts to me. When you jump, you have a bit higher voltage potential to arc between the contacts. When it won't start, try whacking the starter with a dead blow hammer or something. If it starts with the key after a couple whacks, that's most likely your problem.

Let me find you a thread.....

Starter contacts is what I think my similar issue was. Mine was worse in the winter from longer glows giving a small voltage drop. Replaced starter with a Chinese unit and have to order some contacts for the OEM. It fires up instantly every time now.

The other thing I'd done previously was bypass some of the wiring, going from the ignition switch to a relay to make sure nothing else was preventing a good connection.

And after rebuilding the starter, replacing and upgrading battery cables, running an extra ground from the starter to the frame, and having a good battery I would still, on occasion, have a click-click no start issue. I also had tried swapping out the ignition switch. Wiring in a relay finally cured the problem.

I also had a similar problem. Installed a Ford starter relay on the firewall and routed the ignition switch wire to the relay. No more starter problem.

ok. so i upgraded the batt-starter wire to no.2. i also found the white no.8 wire from alt to battery was reduced in size at the batt link. i upgraded that 4" piece of wire to no.8(same as white alt wire). drove around for an hr with a/c on in stop & go traffic and then went into the hill country of west austin. this should have been more than enough to engage the problem. i came home, shut the truck off and then it fired right back up.

If it happens again, check the ignition switch (not the Key/lock) but the electrical swith that the ignition key mechanism fits into.
