no such luck. relocated jack to a different angle and waiting another while.

if bottle jack doesn't work what's Plan C for this job?
Hit it with a quality dead blow hammer until it breaks free.

Also did you remove all the bolts? In the picture above there is still a bolt holding it on.

yep got all the bolts out. took that pic right before i took the last ones out (naively thinking it wouldn’t be up there much longer after i did :D )

bottle jack and some putty knives got the driver side free.

bottle jack has been (very carefully, there’s a lot more in the frame!) applied on passenger side.

making progress at least.

i did mine three times because i screwed up the gasket. i suggest a one piece gasket and make sure that the bolt holes line up with the pan before installing it. i think there is actual a front and back. my first attempt went perfectly. my pan had a hole in it though that was hidden by the oil from the leaking gasket. so take two was with a new pan which i screwed up the gasket. take three went perfectly. the toyota fipg is expensive but awesome stuff.

Thanks! I have the OEM one piece gasket and the Toyota FIPG on hand. Gonna go get some studs and bolts to get it lined up right when it goes back on.

Pretty sure I've read every "fighting the oil pan gasket" thread and post on MUD 15 times now, so hopefully, maybe I learned a thing or two.

Have you read Georg’s @orangefj45 oil pan gasket thread? He suggests and demonstrates the use of copper spray. I did it with my last gasket change.

over 24hr and lots of bottle jacking later, the pan is off.

went out to the garage and cranked it another turn then started working on something on the bench and about stabbed myself with a screwdriver when it popped.

took some serious wiggling back and forth to free the forward end which was still cemented in, but she’s off.

so that’s the good news. the not so good news… this yellow sludge in the oil seems … not good? (ignore the gasket chunks i tossed them in there) it also looks like there are some metal shavings in the bottom of the pan. oh boy.

Well I'm on day 2 laid up in bed / couch with the flu, so no progress.

I took a sample as I was draining the oil and sent that to Blackstone.

Plan right now is to finish the oil pan gasket job, get her back together, run her for a while, and see how things are.

She has seemed to be running well, and given the gasket certainly seemed like the original one, no idea how long the stuff in the pan has been in there.

Nice truck. I can't believe how clean it is! I had an '89 FJ62 that I loved. Driving it around Virgina Beach one night after hurricane Isabel in total blackout, I hit some heavy downed power lines, which scraped it up pretty bad from the grill to the top, shearing off my roof rack.

I took it as a sign from above and decided to redo the whole truck - interior and exterior, plus some engine work. I wish I still had it, but I had to make room (and cash) for my FJ40 frame off resto.

Beautiful rig!

And yes, as I've dug into it more - it seems to have the cleanest body / frame / interior of most any of them I've seen... but with pretty much all original everything in motor and suspension.

Nice that it's "unmolested" but I'm basically gonna have to go through and refresh the whole thing.

It's freezing cold and I've been sick for a week straight. Fantastic.

No major updates, the oil pan is cleaned up and ready to go back on. I've spent a few hours chipping away at the bits of gasket stuck to the block but not made meaningful progress.

Waiting on a heat gun to arrive so I can get that job done, get her buttoned back up and running again.

After 10 days up on jack stands, got the oil pan job done, and drove her out of the garage under her own power.

Not many feelings better than that!

Oil pressure came right up and no obvious leaking yet. Will give her a shake down cruise around town later today.

well who knew rebuilding headlight assemblies would feel like running through a field of wildflowers after that oil pan job.

got all new screws and grommets in all the headlights and new bulbs done.

she has all four of her eyes back and went for a no drama tour around town this afternoon.

unfortunately, the next job is sourcing all the coolant hoses and taking her out of commission again. but loving having her running again!

well after loading a 40lb pail while holding the hatch up with my head this morning, i went ahead and installed the replacement struts.

amazing!
IMG_1350.jpeg

… unfortunately the joy only lasted about 5 minutes - looks like the hatch latch / striker geometry is messed up and it just barely latches correctly with the old sagged out struts, but not with the new ones.

removed the new struts while i have a think on getting it to stay open AND latch closed.

starting to think i should have called this rig the “never easy” :)

Blackstone analysis came back - almost everything looked great - no water or coolant or anything like that.

Copper and lead were off the charts - to the point their analyst said "this would usually point to rod/bearings, but at this level the engine probably wouldn't be running" and their assessment is that PO had dumped in an additive like "Restore" which would have caused those readings.

Will send another sample at next oil change to confirm, but this was all good to hear!
