I have a 1970 fj4 with the original engine.i bought a new voltage regulator I'm not sure how to proceed any help given would be appreciated
Here is the old one

And the new one

I am not sure what wires I need to splice into thanks

On my 71 harness the OEM wires are White/Black stripe
White/Green stripe
White/Red stripe

Perhaps pull away the corrugated platic covering your harness. Is your solid Green wire spliced into the original Toyota WG and your solid Red into the WR. If so then I would think you could just hook up to the matching colors. Not sure what the blue wire on your new regulator is for.

I was told by coolerman the WB is a critical ground for the entire harness on my 71. So if the PO spliced into it make sure it's a good connection.

Perhaps post up a picture of your new regulator and electrical guru's will chime in. @Coolerman @bj40green

is your new one a factory VR? your old one might be. Why not get a toyota one? it bolts right up to those ring terminals.

edit: you may have the original engine but that isn't the original wiring harness so I doubt anyone will be able to help you unless you can identify what the white, green, and red wires are

silly question but why are you replacing your VR?

Thanks guys I will dig deeper into it when it stops raining. I am have power fluctuations when the idle goes up and down the lights dim and will get bright with the increase and decrease of the engine revs. Does the original VR look different then the new one that I have?

OEM would look similar to the dirty unit currently mounted to your fender. I am fairly certain your OEM VR was placed on the drivers side firewall. That's where Coolerman told me it goes. And I do as he says:hillbilly:

I did luck out and find an old school supplier in the pacific northwest who had one. It met my critera of made in Japan.

That new regulator you show will work, but you would need an adapter to adapt the three pin male plug on it to a three pin female plug with bare wires that you would solder to your existing wires. Best to just get the correct regulator with screws for your existing wires.

BTW the blue wire with the female bullet connector is where you would attach a noise filter capacitor. Not required unless you have an old AM radio...

Thanks guys between the rain and work the fj40 has been sitting. I tried to drive it to work but I did not make it out my driveway. Now the head lights don't come on.the running lights work and the blinkers as well..I am going to have to start looking for videos on how to test and trouble shoot electrical issues.i am the worst when it comes to this stuff.

Always remember "Claudia's Admonition" ---"It's a ground issue"

I had the same problem with my headlights not working but all of the others worked fine. I traced the wire back to the fuse panel and resoldered the wire terminals again, fixed it. I also cleaned the panel terminals as well with some fine grit sandpaper.

At first I thought it was the switch, so I took that apart and cleaned it as well, wasn't the solution but I know how it works now.

Good luck
