I have a July 1974 FJ40 with a 4 spd transmission. I need a new clutch but I am having trouble with which kit to buy. How do I know what pressure plate to get?

Remove the inspection cover:
If the pressure plate has three fingers that engage the throw out bearing when the clutch pedal is depressed, then purchase a clutch kit for a 1972.
If the pressure plate has a complete ring of many closely spaced ‘fingers’ then order a clutch kit for a 1978.
If all things are original on your truck I would suspect that you have the early style clutch assembly.

X2 my July 74 had e earlier three finge style clutch. The best way is to look as Poser suggests.

Would the clutch disk be the same for the early and later modes?
