'74 Build Thread

Well...it's about time that I started a build thread for my '40 that I picked up back in March. Well...not sure if I should call it a "build" thread, but I thought it'd be good to keep track of the odds and ins on the rig as I do them. Here a thread to the mini-truck P/S conversion I've been working on:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/603429-mini-truck-power-steering-conversion-column-swap.html

Here's some pictures of what the rig looked like when I picked it up:

I got a new set up shoes for the rig this week. Thanks to a fellow MUD member! Looking forward to getting these put on, but they'll have to wait until I put a lift on (on the project list...) Thanks UPS for taking care of the boxes! NOT.

Removing Heepish things....

Finally getting around to removing the aluminum diamond plate corners that the PO put on. I had my fingers crossed that the rust wouldnt be too bad! To my surprise it wasnt THAT bad...I still plan on replacing at some point because there is the typical rust line between the wheel well and the quarter panel.

Need more help identifying the tub...someone school me!

So once I pulled the passenger side plate off...I could see the outline of where the emblems go! Woo! I'm definitely slapping some used ones there until I get around to doing the body work.

So here's my question: The emblems where definitely on the passenger side at some point...so someone please school me on where the spare tire rack is supposed to be? I've seen it on the passenger side as well as the drivers side. Plus what are these other holes that are in the picture? This is supposedly a '74 tub, but i'm wondering if it came from a later model looking at the bolt holes...maybe a ambulance door was bolted on a some point? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks - JP

Finished up pulling the aluminum plating off...

Wasnt so lucky on the Drivers side. The cover was hiding a big hole...looks like an old CV antenna or something was bolted on and bent at somepoint...

It also looks like you had a tail gate like mine as well but some one has put barn doors on like I did on my 80 fj40 and on that note I'm planing on putting the amby doors that came off and put them on my 74 and my appearance in a pic on here is well lol

Yes the red one is an 80 and green one is my 74

Replacements

I picked these up from Fast Eddy a couple of weeks ago...I'll just need to move the license plate stuff over to the other side to fit my set-up.

Well pretty soon actually. It went from..."I'm going to replace the rear seal" to "I'm swapping in a 4-speed transmission and new transfer case." But I'll make sure to take lots of pictures and I'll probably go ahead and redo the seals and whatnot while I'm at it. I'm actually picking up the 4-speed on Friday from a fellow MUD member. Can't wait! - JP

It's been awhile...

Alright back to it. Been spending plenty of time on MUD...just not on the 40. I broke my arm 3 weeks ago doing CrossFit. Its really put a damper on doing anything. Since the last update I've picked up a couple of new things to keep me busy when I get healed up. The biggest being a new 4-speed transmission and 4 spd Transfer. Big thanks to fellow MUD member Dave. I can't wait to get this thing put in!

Best way to spend a Saturday?

What's the best way to spend a Saturday? Cleaning 30+ years of grime off of a tranny/transfer case. This should keep me busy until the cast comes off!
