I’m putting a rear bumper on my 200 next week. It’s a dual swing out, and has a holder for 3 Jerry cans. I ordered 2 20L water cans from WitsEnd, but I also want 1 20L fuel for the 3rd spot. I have a 2 gallon rotopax that fits (if I bought a 2nd one it’d fill that spot), but in the past year I used the rotopax I’ve grown to despise how it doesn’t self vent. Extreme Altitude and temp changes are a common occurrence and it’s a pain to have to open to vent sometimes multiple times in a day. Any advice on where and what to buy for a high quality 20L fuel can?

Sierra Expeditions has them on the shelf 👍

The easiest would be to go to Will at Sierra Expeditions and save on expensive shipping. He has a large showroom and has many things in stock unlike most companies on the Internet.

20 Liter (Red) Steel NATO Jerry Can Looks like the fuel cans are on sale.

btw the NATO can won't vent either, it's sealed when closed, as I imagine any fuel can worth carrying would be (to prevent dirt ingress or fuel leakage). I don't vent mine on a regular basis when filled, but if there's a significant temp increase i definitely need to be aware of where the spout is pointing when I release the seal.

Wavian which I believe makes the NATO Jerry Cans. Some say the seal up so well you could have them inside your vehicle if needed. I have not tried that though..,,.,,having a FJ40 being able to haul extra fuel is great!

May also keep your temps down a bit, things in the Sun obviously get hot....

Went on the August run last year North of the Grand Canyon. Carried a old jerry can from the seventies inside my FJ62. Never needed the gas so never opened it. I couldn't smell any fumes. Always wanted a 77/78 and was disappointed when a friend had a 79 he was selling offered it to me for a price I couldn't pass up. Can live with the thinner metal in AZ and the fuel tank being six gallons bigger is a plus. If I ever get it running may modify my Con Ferr jerry can holder for the spare to adjust for different angle of the 70+ spare. Have a nice plastic Blitz 2 1/2 gallon tank that doesn't take up much room. That would put it at thirty gallons. Modify your exhaust so it clears the space under the rear floor and add a 22 1/2 gallon spare tank and you would be at 39 gallons. If you need the extra range enough would be worth it.

So i just got my "Scepter" 20L MFC's in the mail today, opened the box up like xmas morning....and they don't say Scepter on them....they say "SupplyCore". I did a quick googling, and don't see a connection between the 2 companies. Any advice? They visually look the same to me, but i paid good $$$ for these to get brand new cans, so don't want to keep if these are not the same equivalent Scepter quality i was expecting. They still say "US Government property". I also just would want to know that the cap wrench and various Scepter accessories would wok on these.

After last year's Aug ROTM where I carried a old five gallon jerry can in the back of my FJ62 thought it might be more convenient to carry a couple smaller/lighter plastic gas cans. Have a couple old Blitz can. A 2 1/2 gallon you unscrew the cap and pull out the spout. The other is a 2 gallon Blitz with a fix spout with a cap that slips on the end. The smaller one would undoubtedly vent inside the cab of a vehicle. I found a cheap 2 gallon Scepter plastic tank that looks like it would seal. Forty miles trip home yesterday inside the cab of our 4Runner it didn't vent even with elevation change. This one has all the safety features. All I can say is this tank does not work on a tank that has the small second spring loaded door inside the fill to prevent the older leaded gas nozzle at the pumps. Fuel ran everywhere. Only thing it's good for is to use a funnel to fill another can. The two gallon Blitz can worked great without spilling any fuel. Do all these new plastic cans have the same fill with the lock you release and then have to press against the end of the fill neck to get it to flow? Seems this is a CA approved CARB thing? Never seen a gas can that can with two page instructions on how to use it.

For my steel jerry cans rigged up a wide funnel that fits into 1/2" PVC that then fit in the small second spring loaded door. That requires holding a five gallon can about chest height. That is a bigger pain then venting a gas can. I just set it on the ground angled so the opening is the highest point. Slowly twist open until it starts to hiss, then wait. Amount of gas to liquid in a full can is small and vents pretty quick.

Scepter US and Scepter Canada are both part of Myers Industries Inc. Probably explains why the tanks are made in the US. If they are the same quality :meh:

Old days I used a clear siphon hose (with an in-line filter) and parked the jerry on a stable surface above the tank opening, no grunting involved...
Re; those Blitz cans with the new CARB compliant fillers, I spill more fuel than the old style nozzles.
I saved the old ones for the saws and weedwhackers, and if you loose the cap? A 12 gauge wad plugs the hole nicely. :smokin:

I was thinking if the O ring was removed the spout where it screws on to the tank it would probably easy to use. The CARB compliant fillers are a joke. I agree they cause more spill then prevent. My biggest problem is always fill the lawn mower. The CARB filler would require block the view into the tank which is what I count on when filling the tank. I have the same tank in your picture. It's a Blitz can and cap is yellow on mine. This is the tank I wouldn't transport inside a vehicle. That did remind me I have yet another plastic can my son left behind when he moved into our Phoenix after we moved. I left a lawn mower which he could never.seem to get started. The Cap was missing. I used a cap used on A/C dryer to keep it clean and dry before using it's more rubbery and seal pretty good but not well enough to transport inside a vehicle. On my two gallon Blitz tank I'm looking at a way to seal it well enough to transport in a vehicle.

For steel jerry cans would be interested the diameter of the hose and what filter? Figure a inline brass ball valve about a foot from the fill end could be used to fill the hose by pushing down in to the can. Then close the valve until is lower than the tank. That way there would be no need to siphon any gas.

Last trip to the valley had my M416 along so figured would use the opportunity to haul gas back to the cabin. Bought one of the siphon pumps from Amazon. Really just a brass check valve but it did work. Alvis @Cruddz you get one for the next time you need to add gas and don't have correct spout. Plan on keeping it in a Ziploc bag. Didn't empty jerry can as much as I would like but a lot better than holding a five gallon can waiting t drain out it's spout.

I have 4 or 5 of those metal cans and love them, still solid and no leaks with fresh gaskets. The 40 has 2-18 gal tanks so they don't get much use anymore. I bought them back in the day my daily driver was a '47 Studebaker 1/2 ton with no working gauge. Think it was the dog at the time, and not the truck that convinced the wife to say yes when I proposed. :hmm:

yeah i think i'll reach out to the guy i bought from.

I believe that the cans you have are the same as the Scepter cans in every way, these are the US made version under license. There are several threads on mud about these.
