Well the mirrors do fit and MOST parts are interchangeable with your US spec mirrors. EXCEPT the triangular mounts that bolt to the door. They are the WRONG angle for LHD vehicles. I plan on having some made on a CNC machine that will work but this may take awhile.

The JDM switch with Retract button will control your US mirrors & vice versa. However, the JDM harness has one additional Blue wire on it (see top right of 2nd picture). I am assuming that this goes to a control unit or relay of some sort.

Note - If your US mirrors are not wobbling i.e. the tabs on the motor are in good shape. You can save a step or two and simply unplug the wiring at the tilt motor (note order) and drop it into the JDM housing and plug it into the JDM harness. One of my driver side US tilt motor tab was broken so I had to do a few more steps.

My donors were different color and I elected to use my US shells so that I only had to repaint the metal, triangular base. If your donor is the same color you just need to swap out the JDM mirror glass/motor with your US mirror glass/motor.

The two JDM mirror housing pieces are the same part number and interchangeable with the US as are the tilt up/down/left/right motors.

You will have to swap out your US mirrors (pictured here in white) and attach them to JDM sub frame. Your US left mirror will be stamped, 3514 L FLAT. The US right mirror will be stamped, 3515 R R1000.
The motor plate that the mirrors attach to were all (both US & JDM) stamped with the number 3108 & had a L or R for the side. Contrary to a speculation that I read on another thread, they appear to tilt up down the same.

My JDM donor mirrors were stamped left, 3510 L R1400 & right, 3510 R R1400

To remove the mirror from the motor, pull the brass pin (3rd picture) up. Reinstall is a PITA though. You will need a pair of needle nose pliers to hold the tab up while inserting the pin.

The mount that bolts to your door is not. The JDM version mount has the folding motor in it and is pictured in blue/green. Contrary to the view in this picture, the JDM and US bases are the same size.

The black, triangular trim piece and bottom trim piece (not pictured) are the same though.

The wiring is another story though. The US mirror wiring plug has a 3 pin connector (Brown, Red, & Black wires). These correspond to door wire harness colors Green, White & Yellow respectively. The JDM has 7 pin connector (in addition to the three US wires it also has a Light Green, Blue, Dark Green & Yellow wires).

I'm not sure about wiring the motor up though as I don't have a wiring diagram from Japan. You can remove the three wires and place in the US 3 pin plug to have tilt functioning until the wiring is figured out. (pictured below)

Anyone who has a JDM wiring schematic of this or has done this mod, please post up.

Thanks

Nice mod!

I'll try digging something up if nobody has it available in Engrish! :hillbilly:

Not sure how well it's going to show up (Hopefully detailed enough), but here ya go!

Hope you have a Japanese GF or something to help you with translating, but if you don't, you just might have to settle for a short, chubby, balding, Japanese, fellow cruiser owner. :hillbilly:

G'luck!

I'm not sure at all on this, but a bodyshop buddy of mine has told me that the door mirror relay "might" be different for/between the US/JDM mirrors.

Again, not sure if that's true or not though!

I'll do it only if you can put me up for some good old S. Carolina hospitality if I ever make it there or something! ;)

Gimme some time, but I'll try to get to it!

I will take a look tomorrow at the FSM I have in the shop for my HDJ-81 and see if it shows anything as well.

I think you'll get the idea even though I goofed up a few things (I didn't think there was grey until I found it, and also white being darker in font than grey, etc...)

Anyway, "B-W" means "Black-White" (I could only choose one color so I just did almost all of the multi-colored ones in black font).

Anyway, I hope it works for you and let me know if I can clarify anything!

BTW, I'm sure you could figure it out, but the colors on the same line/connection do not change unless indicated by different color(s).

Oh, I think I might have a pair of them in my closet. PM me if anyone's interested!

I hope the mod/swap works w/o messing with the relay!

G'luck!!!

Hold on!

I've found a mistake so I'll fix it and post in a jiffy!

I also should clarify that I had already chosen "B" for black so I had selected "L" for blue. (That's what I had to fix as I had put B-Y for blue-yellow, instead of L-Y).

Also, I had to choose green font for doing G-R (green-red). It's not grey-red.
I didn't spell out the colors mainly because a lot of the places did not allow much space, but I see now that I could have done it differently! I was in a hurry, so what do you expect, right? :hillbilly:

Anyway, let me know if I've boo-boo-ed somewhere else or if I can do anymore!

Thanks!!

Mot- How much do I have to PayPal you to send me a Japanese girlfriend? (preferably not chubby or balding!). Op- you will love the retracting mirrors. I use 'em several times daily.
