JDM(?) compass/barometer unit from Prado

I stumbled across this image but I don't have much context:

Obviously it is a more comprehensive compass setup than the one on the U.S.-spec GX470. Does anyone know more about it? I scoured some parts catalogs from the Japanese market online but couldn't find an image or part number for it. And I browsed classifieds listings in the UK and Australia on eBay but never saw the same unit. Maybe it was in Japan or the Middle East only?

I'm wondering if a) it can be adapted to the GX and b) it can show fuel economy in mpg and outside temp in F.

I like that a LOT more than the GX470 display, so much more info at a glance. As for displaying in F, outside of the US it's ALL C, so unless it was a US option, you'll be out of luck there. I would forego the fuel economy info for that display no question. Nice find!

Great info. Not cheap but not all that expensive either. I'd be interested in finding a used one.

I think Toyota may have marketed it as a "field monitor." That's the same name they used for a similar unit in the 3rd gen 4Runner/Hilux Surf.

May have only been on certain MIddle East and South Africa-spec Prados.

I’m willing to bet the dash won’t need to be replaced. Someone was working on this but I cannot find the thread.

The dash does not need to be replaced. I don't believe anyone ever figured out how to make it read in freedom units instead of Celcius.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to procure the parts and try to tackle this retrofit. I'm not too concerned with it ready Celcius but I can always borrow my friend's snapon OBDII reader and see if it can be changed from there.

Yup. I'm the one that first did it in a GX. Handful in the US have done it now. Look at that thread @binaryaudax posted. That has all the info you want. And there is literally no wiring difference to install it. It plugs right in to the same connector the stock GX clock/meter plugs into. Dash does need to be cut, but its easy peasy and there's literally lines to follow that are on the underside of the dash. And yes, so far, Celcius only.

Good question. I did mine about ~1.5 years ago now and live in the hot, hot heat of Southern Utah and I haven't had any peeling issue around the area. When I did the cut though, I did have thoughts of getting some sort of adhesive to coat the edges of the cut. Never did that, but I'm sure it wouldnt be a bad idea for extreme longevity.

The Prado 120 and GX470 have basically the exact same interior, with slight changes to the finish and materials. I am quite confident anything could be fit across from one to the other, given they are like-sided drive (LHD or RHD). BTW, I have also successfully fitted a complete 120 center console setup into my GX and sold a handful of kits to a few others to do the same.

However, the Prado 150 and GX460, while they are quite similar exterior and body, as well as interior dimensions, the cockpit areas appear to be quite different. I think you wont find much in the center console and dash areas that could interchange without completely changing the entire dash and center console.

I did not do the cool box, just a standard Prado console box. I have an ARB fridge/freezer for cold stuff, and the standard console box has about twice as much inside volume vs the cool box.
