so iv got 80series front and rear diff that have had alot of work done to them n iv got a turbo desiel auto gear box t-case. which im thinking about getting a cheap 90series prado and fitting it to as i dont like ifs and want to run 37 as iv got them left over from the 80.

motor was think v8 just for the hell of it.

for the links was thinking just a 3 link from trail gear for the front and a 4 link trail gear for the rear.

to make the back easy to work with it would have to be cut down from a wagon to a ute.

so thats just the start of this idea any help or ideas would be great.

do it, and post up some pics.

I think the prado's got the smaller motors, and the L/2L/3L had some head issues or were prone to it up until they started with the d4d's, so a V8 would be a cool mod for one of those rigs.

Is the rear not a 9.5" diff?

thanks for posting something. the more qusetion i get the more i think about it to iron out any things that will come up in a build like this.

here in oz we just get a small v6. in the states you can get it with a small v8. with a efi v8 how much of electrics would i need to have to run the motor? my auto is not electric so that should be alright.

from what i can tell its not a 9.5 in the back, and i would want the front and back to be the same track and after having a 80series i know that the 5link rear is not that great. could be made better with a full double triangluler 4link.

what year is the prado in question?

We only get the lexus and 4runner variants of the modern prado, which had V8's (4.7's) and I think the 4runner only shares the frame with the lexus.

We never had any domestic prado's all were imported later as I understand it.

1996/1997

prado here just had a desiel or a v6 petrol. its a tuff one just got to buy one and start cutting and see wnat i end you with. as no ones helping much.

It sounds like a pretty cool project.
Unfortunately I don't know much about Prados or even 4Runners.

When it comes to suspension work its all about angles especially if you are dealing with linked suspensions.
Any pics of what you are working with?

The 80 series axles are pretty strong, not 100% familiar with the 8" HP front axle but I had a modified FF rear axle under my FJ60 for a while.

oh the front diffs had the works put into it. the only thing missing is hell fab 6shooter knuckels.

so the plan would be to cut the wagon down and build a rear tray to told all the gear and make room for 37. the rear would come out something like this pic.

So, Im starting to wonder what the benefit of a prado body is, other than you have one?

At this point it sounds as though your looking to swap in a different engine/transmission, different axles, and different susupension.

Your going to be putting it on 37's with a offroad suspension, so having a comfortable drive isnt important.

Which brings me to the question, why do this to a prado, a 60, 80, troop, BJ74 or a toyota truck of sorts would already have the axles with them, and then your just swapping engines and improving the suspension.

For what the prado's worth, id rather do the work to an earlier rig that has more of the components you want, and then keep the 90 for a DD.

cody i know its alot of work on a car like that and that getting another 80 would be the best even quicker but who wants the samething as everone. no me for sure. i would say you have done a heap of different thing to make your rig your own. whos this guy down here in OZ he build a realy great comp rig that no one in the world would have im sure because its just way to much work to.

i was just think people mite put up some idea or things that would come up in a build like this so i had more to think about.

if you want to do it then do it, I seem to only do things the hard way myself, Im just wondering if there is a better or easier direction.

Actually Im a total hypocrit, currently I have an 89 4 door JDM hilux body and frame, Im swapping the engine drivetrain and axles out of an 83 BJ60 into it, 63" chevy leafs out back, rear 60 series leafs up front, 40" Iroks and widening the wheel wells, swapping the interior to LHD and have most of the parts to twin turbo the 3B. The next thing I need to do is cut out a firewall out of a domestic in order to make it LHD and then get the motor in it.

I coulda just bought a running truck and drive it as is, but I must be having too much fun procrastinating this oversized project though.

Hi Aaron

Hope this works, here is some pick's from a Prado chop (1998) into a twin cab.
This might give you some ideas.

Just go ahead with what your thinking , then when your done step back and watch how quick your "custom rig" gets copied or try to.

I chopped my FJ40 into a Ute 7 years ago, was still in the process of full rego / engineering and 2 panel shops were trying to replicate similar rig's.

Have you considered an 80 frame with a 75 series body on it and a 75 series style-side tray?

I ain't never seen one down here, there's one being built in the US I think but it's a 79s front clip [square headlights].

That would be an uber cool truck, turbs-diesel or V8. Highly original.

that does look good. iv not dont a chop be for but have got the ball to try it. iv got mate had have a panel shop that can help me out as will they will most likely finish it off any way as i would want the front gards opened up by at lest 3inchs. the biggest thing im having trubble with is working out the links for the diff after that its not that had as i would never get a prado with 37s over the pits anyway. iv lots of ppl on pp say the projsct is just a wast. but when its all done i better all the mates will be sucking up big time for a look.

hate to sound like a tool. but i know 80s are good as iv had a nice one but they could be great which is lots of work. so why do it to a 80 when its just about the same ammount to do this prado. then i would end up with like the 3rd or 4th one in the world. not that im going for that but thats about how many ppl have done it.

its got to be a V8 had a diesel and dont want to go back.

The chop is nothing to be scared of.
Just have to be smart about it, NOT A RACE, mark it out step back and double check. Masking tape and a good tape is your best friend , also cut it slightly bigger than you want it. (easy to trim off excess then to look for it and have to add some ).

As for the no hoppers standing in the corner watching and giving there 5 cents worth of an opinion they need to be sent on there way down to the corner store to order one pre-made from someone else.

BUILT NOT BOUGHT !!!!

thats it. mate you are getting be more talking into this build now.

i was going to weld the back door up so that way i get a rounded roof the cut and shut it in frpnt of the wheel so it was a space cab. but with the back cut of would build a cage in it the weld the rear door part back to the cab. to look a bit like this.
