Is this the sign of an upcoming Birf rebuild?

If so how long do I have? It's my daily driver but only 10 miles/day. I probably can't get to it for another month.
Thanks

Most of us drive years with a leaky birf *cough*

There is a square plug on top, use it to pack in more grease to keep it from drying out.

Start planning on doing a knuckle rebuild though. It's in your future ;)

A front axle service, yes, probably - but as for needing to buy new birfs it's all about noise at full lock (clicking) - but like advised, top off your grease & you could put a good year or 2 on that, unless you already have drained all the diff fluid (pop open fill plug on diff - either a 22 or 24 mm socket) -and the axle has been cleaned.

IIRC FR axle service is a 90K interval, so your odometer will tell you a lot, but I had "birf soup" sling clear out onto my tire sidewall when I destroyed a axle shell & the inner shaft got way out of riding right on the seal.

Mine looks just like that and probably has for 10's of 1,000's of miles. I think there's quite a bit of overreacting to Birfs here. Mine don't 'drip' and they don't click. Until they do either of those, when the moly is at the correct level, I'll keep driving it.

They cost ~$85 per pair but shipping from Oz is relatively expensive, could be as high as ~$65, so figure $150 (US) shipped.

That product says no more grease dilution. How's that? The Birfs are just another CV joint. I'm surprised they didn't come from the factory with a boot like that!

Looks really nice, but it hides the warning signs that you need to do something about your birf soup ;)

No hijack intended to the OP's thread, but about the CV boots, I think the idea is to protect the swivel balls and rubber seals from constantly being exposed to rocks, dirt, water and to decrease any water and grit that might find it's way into the knuckle cavity. Maybe part of the PM after installing these boots would be to open them up now and then to check what's inside??

It looks normal. If there is play in the knuckle bearings or if it was leaking worse (dripping gear lube) then it would be time to worry about it.
