I bought a 1969 fj40. It has a fold down tailgate. The hard top that came with it has swing out ambulance doors. Is this the correct top? I've tried searching the forum but can't find this exact answer. If it has a tailgate does that mean it never had a hard top and was just a soft top? Any help would be appreciated

Should be a flip up top hatch it should look something like this
Darn... wrong picture this is an earlier model than your 69

I wanna say your 69 rigs has the correct top. I wanna say it was after 74 or 75 were they switch to the amby doors. So if it has the fold hatch then it should be correct.

Did the soft top that era not have a canvas full ambi door I cant remember that far back

I don't believe full soft ambulance doors were ever offered in the US.

full ambulance doors were on 75 and newer rigs with 77 and newer getting the kick out small side window for hardtop, tailgate and upper split doors for non us soft top

66-74 would have a lift gate and lower barn doors on the tub if hardtop, tailgate with a single rollup flap for soft top.

65 and earlier hardtop would be the bifold door pictured above with lower barn doors on hardtop, same soft top setup as 66-74

if yours was a hardtop, it would look like this picture i just stole from the web

Welcome to mud :flipoff2:

The hard top you have can be made to fit by retrofitting the [strike]bi-fold[/strike] correct upper door and header. The amby doors you have are probably worth more than that door would cost, so you might even come out ahead.

I think you should use the ambulance doors and send me that tailgate so it's not cluttering up your shop.

Agree with the masses that it sounds like you have a factory soft top model. There are things on the body to help ID this. If no mods have been done, then this is a good thing in some cases. The rear tailgate is sought after by many. Any picture will tell all. Nice find, my first was a 69 (FJ40), carried me from Kodiak to North Carolina in 11 days.

So if mine was in fact a factory soft top. Will a hard top not fit at all?

from 1964 on, hardtops will fit on soft top models. the ambulance doors will not fit perfectly. they have a different cut at the corners and you'll have to drill holes for the lower hinges.

you can use earlier model lift gate, but will need to change the header that the lift gate attaches to. not a difficult thing and the easiest and most appropriate solution;

fast eddy's been smoking crack because you can't retrofit bifold doors to a 66 and newer top. ;) to have the bifold door, you would have to change the entire top to the corrugated style top.
