I have F434803 which shows on the SOR site being built approx. Aug-Sept of 1973. It has the oil filler on the valve cover which also has an F-155 sticker. It has the oil filter on the drivers side. Does this engine have the inferior oil filtration system? Is it worth rebuilding or should I search for a 2F motor? Thanks in advance for your input.

Sounds like a late F, Transition motor, F and a half. Good motor in my opinion. It has the full filtration oiling system. GL

If the oil filter is on the driver's side, wouldn't that be "pre" transition "F &1/2" Ed? I thought the "good ones had the oil filter on the passenger side just like the 2F does.

Whoops! Driver's side....Passenger side:doh: You are right.

EDIT: Next time I'll read for content

Big Bore Lover is correct

You are correct that he is correct, as I correctly pointed out.;)

Now that I know that it has the F oil system is it worth building or should I look for a 2F?

Rebuild costs between F and 2F are almost identical, so i think I'd find a good core, probably the later 2F from a FJ60 and rebuild that. JMO

Way I hear it, you have the good one. Oil on passenger side with the oil filter fixture integrated into the block. Oil filtration on f engines was bypass type. filtering oil as afterthought. The fs' (I think) had remote oil filter mount on drivers side. Someone here can tell you how to figure out exact man. date from engine serisl#s'. Transition motors are basically same as f except 3.54" bore. Your f should have 4 ring per piston with domes for 9 to 1 comp. Old fs' had 7.8 to 1 comp. More horseys. 2fs went 3 ring per piston somewhere in mid 70s I think. Look and see if you have header studs outside # 1 and outside # 6. I think old fs' lacked those 2 studs. Additional header studs a good thing.

You read as well as I do...............filter is on the driver's side:doh:

I had a '74 once that had a remote filter on the drivers side and the later functional filter head bolted to the block on the drivers side.... it was considered by many to be a mor"F"odite .........(oo)...

Classic F engine

Howdy,
Just my humble opinion, I like the "classic-ness" of the F engine. Oddly, my '76 40 came with a '71 F engine. It had a cracked block so I rebuilt it. I've put about 7000 miles on it and I'm very proud of how well it runs. Unless you're looking for more horsepower keep what you have and work with it.

Leon...
