Is this LX570 rusty?

The biggest problem with the LX in the very start of this thread is not the rust (of which there is definitely lots), but the fact that someone's trying to cover it up (and quite poorly, at that). If they're hiding that, what else are they hiding? Good move on passing on that vehicle.

Yeah that rubbed me the wrong way. That’s why I started focusing on Specific Dealers this time around. This current one is from a Lexus dealership.

Hopefully this thread can prove useful for other buyers when shopping for their vehicles. I saw several threads with the “Is this rusty…” theme, but most of them just have just a single vehicle as the topic.

If you do buy a rusty 200, you could look into getting one of the induction bolt heaters to help with the inevitable maintenance issues on fasteners.

I have used them before. The heat coils come in different angels and lengths and they burn out after several uses. So have spare coils for big jobs.

The smaller the tool the more useful in tight spots. Safer than a torch but just as damaging if you are not careful around wiring. I typically cover nearby “soft stuff” with wet rags or towels..

Another small update. Proceeding with the current vehicle, but I looked into the service history and saw a very recent report from last month. Probably what prompted the original owner to sell or trade the vehicle in to Lexus. I asked the sales guy and you guys can see the reply. Would this be enough to convince you guys to move forward?

Worst case scenario, I purchase the vehicle and the issue is actually still there. Would I have any recourse? If I don’t, how much would this cost me to rectify?

My gut tells me to give him the benefit of the doubt since it is a Lexus Dealership and they have a reputation to uphold, but a part of me is skeptical because… sales guy.

Ask indoepentant import shop to inspect oil leak for $100-200 get THEIR recommendation. Probably a rms or fms or ac system. Not a major concern for that age vehicle. Add some Lucas and let her rip.

That is absolutely what most used car sales guys would say to make a sale. I 100% agree with your trouble-then-trade assessment.

I have never heard of a “coolant flow code.” There is no direct sensor for low coolant. My concern would be the coolant got low enough that the temp shot up which could upset the computer.

These valley plate leaks aren’t uncommon, but most people catch them visually before any damage is done. Sometimes that isn’t the case. Personally I’d wonder about that here..

Used oil analysis is one way to check for evidence of trouble, though the recent oil change impairs that a bit, depending on the extent of a coolant leak it may still show up.

Personally I’d want more assurance the work was done and done correctly. Appropriate, updated sealant on the valley plate. An actual cam tower reseal if it was needed. Accumulators. These would all be big jobs. They should have some further evidence of these repairs. Parts invoices, whatever. If they can’t provide that assurance I’d keep looking.

I’m currently still within the window of purchasing the vehicle mentioned above. I decided I will be asking the seller for a chance to get a PPI done. If they say no under any circumstances, then I’m bailing. Ball is in their court.

Just to give everyone an update.

I took everyone’s advice to heart and waited. Around July, a 2014 LX570 popped up on CarMax. Lived in CA its whole life. I hopped on it. I’ve been driving it ever since.

Now here comes the bad news. I noticed last night that I had some stains on my driveway.

Looked this morning and I see this guy.

Oof.

Luckily I am within the 90 day warranty period. I also opted to get the full Maxcare coverage.

Now I’m just hoping this won’t take long to get fixed.

I too bought a 200 series in late June from CarMax and also opted for the maxcare warranty.

Thus far it's been perfect and haven't needed to use the warranty but I'd love to hear how your situation plays out if you end up using the CarMax warranty.

Why though? We know he wouldn't "sale" the car to someone if it hadn't been on the rack and inspected/repaired.

Congrats OP. Let us know how that maxcare coverage claim goes- we purchased 2 vehicles in June from carmax and opted for the maxcare coverage.

There’s a good chance I know which one yours is. Haha. It was most definitely out of my price range.

I will keep everyone updated on the Maxcare process. Most of the info I used to make my decisions about the purchase was from the CarMax subreddit. Its quite active with customers and employees sharing great advice.

I just spent the last hour trying to figure out which specific tube/part number is leaking. It looks like the main tube that feeds into part 48940 Self-leveling Valve, but I eat crayons so I can’t trust myself.


I’m parsing through diagrams and parts lists but I can’t pinpoint it. Anyone have any sources for diagrams that can help me out?
