Is this LX570 rusty?

I use my lx as and bought it with the idea to be an approach vehicle. Works great in this role.

At this point, the price I’m paying for this 2008 LX570 is $18k. It’s financed through them. Is there no price they can offer me (within reason for them) to consider keeping the deal if the rust is minimal?

I understand that I can probably find much cheaper prices through private sales (I consistently do), but the few I have attempted to complete have left quite a bad taste in my mouth. I have reached a point where I would rather pay a premium to have the time and the option to walk away if things feel wrong.

I'd still prefer a NV/AZ/SoCal vehicle just for the lack of rust.

OTOH, even if you assume the worst, the LX will suit your needs for a long time as it is. The rule of thumb around here is to a) by the newest and lowest miles you can afford; b) allocate about $2k for baselining, i.e. fixing the previously overlooked maintenance items that should be done now, at that mileage. Rust is a killer, for sure. If you really want to buy this one now, then go look at it in person. The cost of that trip will be worth it in peace of mine whichever way you decide.

That looks like woolwax or Fluid Film. If it is a hard undercoating i would steer clear but an oil soft lanolin product such as Woolwax or Fluid Film, like what this looks like, is of zero concern.

WTF. I don’t see any rust. Is this April 1?

The rust is apparently underneath a coating.

I still haven’t heard back from the PPI. They’re also doing a recall on the vehicle (airbag sensors) so they’re waiting until that’s done I guess.

Speak of the devil.

Just got the video back from Lexus.

In addition,
These are the two recommendations they attached to the inspection. I have mixed feelings.

(I don’t know what this refers to)

Let me know what everyone thinks!

Run.

Not terrible overall, but there is definitely some good rust on the AHC hardware. If you were in the rust belt, I'd say fine, woolwax it every year and run it into the ground. But since you're in the desert, I would move on and get a better one.

Hard pass.

On top of what has been listed so far, one torn steering rack boot (how?), and at least one of the rear brake backing plates (which support the parking brake as well) is rusted through.

A small update for everyone interested. I called the seller and let them know I’m going to pass.

The search continues. I’ll post any new prospects if I make it far enough into the process.

I appreciate everyone’s help!

Alright small update:

I have three options now. All within the same price of each other.

Option 1:
LC200, 2008. 1 owner. No rust (verified). 250k miles.

Option 2:
LX570 2008. 1 owner. I assume no rust since southern states. 150k miles.

Option 3:
Lx570 2010. 2 owners. Different southern states. 200k miles.

These options are pretty much all within 5% in price of each other and all from major dealerships.

I’m leaning towards the LC200, but I have a feeling it was ridden much harder than the other 2. My pragmatic side is telling me to go for Option 2, because less miles, more comfy, etc. Option 3 is there just because it’s a nice color and it’s newer.

Thoughts?

Have you driven both the LC200 and LX570? Most enthusiast types will have a strong preference between the two. Despite their overall similarity, they do each have their own driving character. If you haven't already done so, drive both before picking. But if you're an LX guy, or genuinely neutral, then option 2 looks best on paper. There is no real difference between a 2008 and a 2010. 2013 was the first meaningful update.

^^^ This.

In addition, in CO we typically see a $10k premium for a LC over an LX with same year/miles - which would make me wonder about the condition of the LC above, even with the 100k mileage difference.

Just a thought.

That’s what made me think it was “rode hard”

Mind you, I used to average 50-60k per year - just because I like to drive and what's a 500 mile round trip for lunch at a nice BBQ joint?

But most folks ain't like that.

Hello. I’m folks.

Contacted option 2. Moving forward with that.

1 thought - I think the 2008s didn’t have Bluetooth
