Is a front locker worth it, or just an excuse to spend $$ and break stuff?

Axle is together in the shop, got a harness put together tonight. If I'm feeling energetic I'll try to get the axle swapped and wired up tomorrow, have some snow wheeling to do on Saturday

a****** :flipoff2:

Did you have to get custom shafts for the actuator side of the diff? Need more splines than stock for the shift collar, right?

Was able to find a Toyota long-spline shaft (HJ 61 part I assume) in the classifieds :) I think it'll wait a few more days to go on, decided I don't want to risk missing wheeling tomorrow if something come up in the swap.

Trying to get an 80 rear e-locker for the front of my newest 60 also.
So far the price is still too high.
If it works out, I'll get wit cha on what I need

Just gave the control harness a dry run in the garage, all looks good

Aside from general axle rebuild stuff I'd say I'm in to it to the tune of $600 for the diff, HJ61 inner and wiring stuff. Not cheap, but not bad considering what an ARB would run by the time it's installed.

The lights and vents showed up this week

Nice star BTW ;)

Figure I should link some of the stuff that's helped me.

Here's is "theferg's" write up on installing these lockers in a 60 series: Toyota 80 Series Electric Locking Differentials Retrofit for an FJ60

Here's the info I used for wiring: Outdoor Recreation Network - Off-Highway, Jeep, & 4x4 Fun
I used the first diagram shown with 2 DPDT relays (normally closed terminals ignored) and instead of having separate locking and unlocking lights, I wired one "motor" light in parallel with the motor. I am using a spare power antenna switch as a momentary SPDT switch to activate the locker.

Front locker best thing you could to to any cruiser

As with anything done outside in February on a Canadian truck, (i.e. corroded) taking a bit longer than originally anticipated..... But got everything torn apart yesterday, hopefully will have the truck back on the road tonight, wired up or not.

Wow-And I was feeling sorry for myself when it was 55 degrees and raining.

You should move.

It also looks like you violated the only one Cruiser non-operational at a time rule. Or is that the parts truck you got from Danimal?

Keep the updates coming along.

Man you need to put some kind of tent over that project and light one of those propane heaters like the dry-wallers use in houses that don't have the furnace operational yet. My joints are aching just thinking about you lying there in the snow swinging wrenches.

LOL!

Yeah! It's 52* outside now so I decided to stay inside and eat noodles... Jeeezz, we're spoiled.

And lovin' it.

:D

Yup, that's the future truck from Dan. The axle was pulled off of it to work through in the garage, it'll get the axle from under Wobble so it's mobile when moving time comes. It sure is nice having it right there to "liberate" parts from. I had to strip the brake line to the front axle back further than I would have liked due to seized joints.....

Sweet! Working by yourself? Must be cold out there.

Slowly poking away by my self. It's actually a nice day today, just a couple degrees below freezing, and sunny. My brother gave me a pair of insulted bib overalls for Christmas, I'm really liking them right now. :)

The axle is resting in place on the springs now, with new castor shims under it. After grabbing some lunch I'll head out and start bolting everything up again.

All bolted up, just need to borrow a roommate to bleed the brakes tomorrow, and splice the harness to the locker. :grinpimp:

Wiring is spliced in and it works :)

Sweet. I'd ask you to post pics but it's kinda hard to show the locker locking when it's installed.

Question: Do you think you would experience the issue with the splines twisting on the locking collar side? Harder core 80 series guys with e-lockers experience that problem sometimes, at least from what I've read.

Theoretically it could happen, since he is using the rear 80 locker for the front of the FJ62, and it's only the rear that has this particular issue.

I was thinking that it wouldn't happen in the front for this application because the majority of the weight is on the rear axle when climbing an obstacle, so with less load on the front, it may be ok. Just thinking a bit too much about it I guess

I have a rear powertrax and a front ARB. I was looking at some property a couple weeks ago. The road is new, gravel and clay and drops 500' in 1/3 mile. Coming back up I was locked in front and rear and though the tires were digging in 6-8", we kept moving forward. We drove all the way out - avoiding the winch cable. I was incredibly grateful for the front locker as I wouldn't have made it, otherwise. For that one outing, it made the locker worth it!

If you want an ARB, send me a PM for the best price.

Dan
