Just bought a 2009 GX 470 with 91K miles (base); live west of Colorado Springs, and I want to be able to do moderate off-roading with the vehicle and to use it as a base camp for accessing remote trail heads and areas to mountain bike.

Already impressed with the truck as my wife was able to drive it up my steep, icy drive from a dead stop on the steepest part of the drive. Same area had snagged a friend's Ram 2500 4x4 and he slid off the drive into a snowbank from which I had to recover him from (my drive is 500+ feet long). We get a lot of snow (36 inches in the last week alone).

Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to do much for a while as immediately after I bought the truck I tore my Achilles tendon from the bone and just had surgery to fix it (16 week recovery). Oh, and did I mention I had back surgery 3 days before the Achilles repair?

This said, this forum has been a wealth of information, so in the last few weeks I have learned a great deal about the GX.

My question is this: given my plans, what would be the single biggest bang for the buck I can get once I am able to start working on the vehicle? I do most of the work on my vehicles and I have put a lift kit on a Suburban, installed an engine in the same, and can with a bit of effort, do most mechanical tasks. Electrical, beyond simple wiring is a pain. My suspension seems to be in good condition, and the truck is under an extended warranty for the next 24000 miles, so I am not in a rush to replace the suspension right now, so again biggest bang for the buck?

Thanks.

With that much snow and ice, I'd say throw a set of Duratracs on it and call it a day. Maybe 1 size bigger for kicks.

Since you live in Woodland Park, minutes (seconds maybe!) away from some of the best off road trails in the country, I'd say put some sliders or at least bigger tires on it.

By the way, there are at least a couple of GX'ers on this board living in Colorado Springs. HeftyFab in the Springs is probably going to be making some armor for the GX later this year, so keep an eye on that.

welcome, I would do skids plates, protect that underside. I just ordered some from RCI in Fort Collins, have picked them up yet.

Since you live on the front range, I would start looking for a extra set of wheels, lots of 4runner wheels out there and they fit, then for winter get some good snow tires and you'll be able to get around when others are stuck.

Cool, another CO 470 owner. What is this RCI you speak of in Fort Collins coops? I live in the Fort. I'd like to check them out.

THanks
