Hi!

So after 2 years off the road I have my FJ40 back on the road (well kind of). I bought this for $5K about 3/4 restored and have been finishing it up. I still have yet to paint the hardtop and doors but at this point it is about driveable. Some of the cool stuff done to it. Rear disc conversion, rhino lined interior the roof has been rhino-lined white, new sheet metal and paint, etc. It is a post 9/77 model.

I also want to thank everyone that has helped me to get it to this point, and I have yet another issue.
On to my question/problem: It starts right up no problem and idles fine, but as I drive down the road and gain speed (roughly 3rd gear) it starts choking out and surging, then it almost stalls and I have to let it come to a stop, jockey the choke and really play with the gas to keep it from stalling out. After that it has trouble running in all RPM ranges until it sits for awhile again. At first I thought I was having alt/electrical issues but I now think it is a fuel delivery problem. I read a few post on here and checked the following...after it acts up I shut it off and checked the fuel in the float-nothing visible through the inspection window. I pulled off the fuel line and cranked the motor over...no fuel for the first few cranks then it would spit out in surges I have a pic of the fuel collected for about 10 seconds of constant cranking, I believe it's the fuel pump...I have changed the fuel filter and have sprayed the carbi out with carb clean.

ANy ideas would help greatly. I am thinking the diaphram is dried out so I am only getting partial fuel supply?? Check out the pics of my 40 and the fuel. I can only post two pics so I can't show more of it..
THanks! NAthan

Clogged fuel pickup in the tank or the line going into the fuel pump. Bet if you pull the tank it is full of nice rust chunks just waiting to clog up the fuel supply line. The fuel in your bottle even looks rust colored. If you want to rule out the fuel pump put the intake hose into a can of fresh gas and see if the truck runs 100% better and pumps a hell of a lot more fuel into your bottle in 10 seconds.

Pm CDan for new tank.

Or another popular choice is guys are installing our rear fuel cell as their one-and-only stand alone fuel tank. Neat idea because it is nylon, won't rust, and holds 22 gal. You can see it at www.downeyoff-road.com.

Thanks! I'll look into it this weekend and check it out. and thanks for understanding my lack of knowledge!! I am only used to working on standard mx items! and if my tank is fubared I will also look into the resources provided!!

Please provide a direct link to this tank you speak of, I can't seem to find it anywhere on your site. I know your company was very slow to embrace the Web and your site still shows it unfortunately. This is the age of the Web and no one wants to have to spend $5 to buy a catalog to see all the products you offer when every other vendor has them all on the Web for free.

Another option is to have your tank sealed, either DIY or professionally. POR sells a tank kit for about 50 bucks, but there are others as well.

Pull out the fuel sending unit and check the inside with a flashlight before you spring for a new tank.

I had the same exact problem that you describe a few weeks ago. I ended up putting on an electric pump and changing the fuel lines.
I've had no issues since.

Good luck

John , I wish you weren't telling the truth about our slowness to embrace the web, but you are. Please look for the tank at www.downeyoff-road.com/bodycomponents/auxiliarytanks., and pray that we get up to speed sooner than later---Thanks

The tank is easy to remove if you just want to clean it. When the engine starts to spudder shut the engine off and look at the site glass on the carb. Don't be surprised if you also have a bad fuel pump. But make sure you have a good flow of fuel going to the pump first.
