Intermittent ignition

Novice mechanic here
I’ve done some electrical work - rebuilt light harness (brakes, backup, turn signals).

My ignition works sometime but 50% of the time I get no power to the starter - nothing happens. When it does work I feel it is weak. So I had a bypass button installed and it works every time.

Wondering how I can check and I should check with the keyed ignition switch. When turned to Aux position all the lights work and it allows the bypass button to work. Thanks for any advice on how to proceed

When asking for help year/model/market helps.
You can rebuild some ignition switches, but a lot easier to just get a new one. I think I'm on #3 for my 72 which I have had since 82.

Clean the connectors at the battery terminals, and at the other end. Look at crimp connections carefully - corrosion can crawl under the insulation and ruin the connection. Clean both sides of plugs connectors - use a q-tip to wipe on some dielectric grease after they are clean.

Remove 4 screws on steering column housing. Replace ignition switch. i think you might have to use an awl in a little hole to back out the key assembly but maybe not. IYKYK an FJ40 could be driven away in minutes without a key. I like my early door vent windows because the passenger side latch doesn't click so that is my access point when if I lock myself out. Don't share this on the internet.
