Installing Wheel Hub Studs - What is the correct way? (1 Viewer)

Interesting on the 3/8” @lcwizard. I am running 7/16” on my FF rear end and about to go bore out my front hubs for the same. I will watch for cracks, but I disagree on inadequate material. Not sure what method you used to drill/tap but I did so on my Bridgeport with a jig that I made, so every hole is straight, true and centered. I could see potential issues if done with a regular drill or drill press. I have broken the stock studs often. Even on the street.
Sorry for the thread hijack, I realize this doesn’t pertain to most Starbucks crawlers on here, however not having to deal with cone washers if you do frequent maintenance is sooo nice.

@cruisermatt, I don't like the idea of heavily modified hubs since spares won't be available if needed. Ironic given I am doing the FROR brake setup which isn't exactly stock either.

This is pretty logical, I’m going to be making a third hub for a spare to be safe though. I actually carried a spare hub loaded with bearings, grease and studs in my trail box when I still ran stock studs. Easier to swap the whole hub then extract six studs on the trail.

I do carry a spare rear FF FZJ80 hub when wheeling hard trails. I am the same way, throw the new hub and new axle shaft on and worry about the damaged goods at home.

Now I need to see if I want to carry a front hub to boot! Trail spares start to get heavy enough and then you are more prone to breaking. I think I don't have breaking issues often since I am on 35's and stock tcase gears. Winch usually comes out 1-2 times on the hard trails for steep waterfalls etc.

New hardware arrived. I also ordered Loctite 268 for the stud install. I spent probably 30 mins going over their chart.

Is that all the crap I read in the 80 series forums? Those kids love to mod their rear hubs just like you. I can't understand it, if you are stripping / shearing studs all day long it's probably time for a big boy axle...

I haven’t seen anyone do it in the 80 section yet, they don’t have enough power to have issues. I’ve got a set of 80 hubs on the way to mod for a friend, he has a V8 though.
I didn’t have any issue with mine until I put the V8 in. Broke them all on the third test drive. Haven’t wheeled it yet but haven’t had and issue yet in 8 months of aggressive street driving with a lunchbox locker
