Are you thinking he's already seized it?

I hope not. If it turns over, he's still good. BA_Does the engine turn over when you crank it?

You timing may just be off. If you are sure everything lis lined up and installed right, you can have someone crank it while you turn the body of the distributor. I found that with the electronic ones, it is very easy to set it by eye by looking at the line on the pick up. It's much harder with points because you don't know exactly when the points open.

Good luck.

Sounds like he has/had it 180* out of time on his early attempts.

NOt seized, i have oil pressure every time, ok here is the stat, i've noticed that there are two different tdc, as everyone else has already mentioned. I got it to start, but a very hard start, and when it did, it would only run (barley at that) with the dizzy fully advanced.

What does that mean, 1 tooth off or 180 degrees.

It sounds just a tooth off. You're close. Go through the steps again, it should work. Do you have the spark plug wires attached correctly? It's easy to reverse a couple of them, as I learned long ago.

Yeah, that does sound one tooth off. Almost there!

Another nice thing about the OEM Big Cap.......cap and wires are numbered:D

It's alive... It was just one tooth off, set the timing, adjusted the carb and put the aircleaner back on, good to go. I've just about done timing and carb adjustment so many times i can do it in a matter of minutes without a vaccum gauge.

I just have to say that it is amazing what cleaning out the inside of the dizzy did to the way the engine runs, i removed so much gunk, grease, oil, water, dirt, crap, and lots of rust out of that dizzy you wouldn't believe. I literally woke up at 9 am yesterday and worked on just cleaning out the dizzy for hours straight. Putting that bearing back in was a true bitch. But damn, it runs so good now, and vaccum advance finally works. Thanks for everyone's help, learned alot of valuable stuff.:bounce:

This is why we all love our 40's they are a labour of love. Top stuff BA The journey may have been painful but when you arrive and look back at everything it all seems to fall into place. Life the universe and everything is at the end of the day as simple as a 40:)
