My 1996 LX450 does not have one to my surprise and I was wondering if any of you have installed an OEM or aftermarket system and have any reccomendations. Also, if so, how long of a project would it be? Thanks in advance, Eric

I fitted a 3rd party alarm and keyless entry to a '93 Jap import the other day. They can be picked up pretty cheaply.

The hardest part was chasing down the wires.

If you look at the kits that support keyless entry they should have a set of three wires to for I think it was negative pulse (it could be positive) switching from the drivers side door lock - you need a circuit diagram to show you which wires.

One of the manuals (can't remember which) will show you a circuit diagram of the car's locking system and will include whre the OEM alarm connects in.

You will need to run the lock and unlock wires for the alarm into the drivers side door and connect up to the wires coming from the key lock.

You will also need/want to run wires to the indicators to indicate when the alarm is activated/de-activated - these can be tapped into the wiring for the hazard light.

If you want to link it into the interior light, I tapped into wires behind the passenger side kick panel that were going up the A pillar to the interior light.

Going back to the manual, the one I used was RM315E which was a suplement to the earlier chassis manual - you might need a different one for your manual. Either way a circuit diagrams for the central locking, hazard/indicator lights and interior lights are essential.

For all the connections I broke the loom wire and then joined in the alarm wire and soldered it and then used shrink wrap to seal it. Don't forget to put the shrink wrap on before soldering - easily forgotten.

Alternatively you could cut the wire you are tapping into and then use one of the new crimp connectors that heat shrink and seal themselves to join again with the alarm wire.

Sorry it is a little vagiue, buit should be enough to get yourself going.

Good luck.

We bought an alarm with remote locking, internal sensors (I think Ultrasonic), monitoring the doors, immobiliser, etc for around 70 GB pounds, so I guess around $120.

After the initial messing around and finding the circuit diagrams it only took 2-3 hours to put in all the new wiring.

Could you fill us in as what you've checked to conclude this? (i.e. no LED in dash, no alarm module found under driver's seat...)

If all the above is true, I believe the LXs are prewired; so just grab a used one on Ebay or a junk yard and slap it in.

FWIW, the previous owner of my rig trashed the keyless entry/alarm by installing some kind of viper crap. Anywho, i found a rs3000 alarm from cruiserparts.net for a descent price. Problem was the dealer wanted $600 to install it. I shipped it back to cruiserparts.net and they thankfully refunded me. Great service. So if you want one there should be one there. But if you want it installed it may cost a pretty penny.

I was wondering about this to some extent. Unfortunately I am overseas for 4 more months but I'll see if I can get the Mrs. to look for it...

Were any 93's prewired for this?

I just got the rig and no remote or blinking light.

Thanks
