Install-7 pin mod question- got it!!!

I've looked at the write up on the 7 pin mod. I have the driver side kick panel off now.
Solved the puzzle....

I have the pin 7 mod, but still trying to find out that one instance (or two) when I don't necessarily want to have the CDL engaged in Low. Enlighten me! Perhaps trying to turn sharply in Moab slickrock after coming over an obstacle?

Backing a trailer down a steep boat ramp or other maneuvering that requires low range.

I've been flat towing my 40 this weekend with the 80, and when i got home I wanted to pull my 40 up to the garage (steep driveway). Low range made it much easier on the transmission and engine, no lugging.

Try solid bedrock aka slick rock, keeps the drive tran from binding up. Such as this stuff. Cool shot of my buddies cruzer.
 
Yes, I can understand the slick rock logic.

Backing down a steep boat ramp - why would having CDL engaged impede things? If you're turning to position the trailer better, isn't this happening on a wet surface? Therefore CDL locked wouldn't bind up. Just playing the devil's advocate!

Low range for steep driveway - again, why would CDL locked be trouble here? IIs it because you want it unlocked due to turning on concerete surface? Makes sense if that's the case.

Unplowed roads - ?? I agree having the CDL engaged on high is nice. Is that what you're referring to?

I can only reply to unplowed roads, its great, and I drive in Alaska :D
 
My Cruiser is definitely going to get the CDL/pin 7 treatment pretty soon.

It would just be nice to have the option....and it is not a difficult mod. to perform.

As already noted, when traction is not a concern but, a little extra "grunt" is needed or perhaps engine braking is wanted then it makes sense to me.

It is a bit sacrilegious.....but I have an Early model Bronco that has a 2 wheel low position (if you know where it is) and I use it often instead of 4 low on hard pavement.

Not everyone has a need for it I understand that, and frankly I haven't heard of a lot LC transfer cases "grenading" from minimal use when locked on hard surfaces but...it is certainly possible, and there is no need to unduly stress my Cruiser.

I love my Cruiser!

Choice in all things, having an option is the thing, rather than being forced to follow the manufacturers dictate. When trailer reversing were slow and accurate placement is required low range is much more controllable or when parking in an exceptionally tight parking lot. Not only does having the diff unlocked prevent wind up but it also makes the steering lighter and even in some instances makes steering possible at all. As mentioned increased engine braking and power are also some times required.

No, I have used it to drive in 4 high with the CDL engaged on snow covered roads.
 
Ahh, I see...however, that isn't the point of my question!! Why is it necessary to do the pin 7 mod? You can still engage the CDL on high w/o this mod.

it is not necessary but it is nice and free to do just takes a bit of your time, there are already plenty of examples of where it is useful above.
 
A few reasons for me. Primarily like the option when pulling a vehicle out of a ditch while the cruiser is on high traction pavement. Also when on a long, steep, tight, winding, trail that requires 4-low to avoid braking too much but isn't low traction to the point the CDL is needed, it's nice to be able to disengage it to relieve any binding through the turns etc. Did several miles this way last weekend.
