In what has become the job that never ends…
I noticed the gaskets were toast on my injectors and as I was replacing them I noticed one of the plastic caps that holds the filter basket was broken on one of them. Damn $200 piece of plastic.
it’s considered part of the injector and not sold separately.
My options are many-fold…
1. Buy rebuild kit off eBay (chyyyyyy-naaaa)
2. Buy $180 lifetime warranty injector from O’reilly’s that I can get today.
3. Buy a cheap-o python brand injector
4. Buy the cheap injector and try to transfer the basket cap to the oem injector.
I really want to stay OEM, but I’m kind of in a bind.
The Drama:
I bought an ‘05 Highlander a couple years back when I didn’t have time to work on my own vehicles, and somehow I and none of the mechanics I used noticed the timing belt/water pump hadn’t been replaced in 170k miles/14 years. Anyway, it’s my commuter but the pump started squeaking right before I drove 1k miles to visit family in SoCal so I’m super nervous to commute my daily 160 miles in it and want to get the cruiser back in service asap until I can get the water pump/TB done on the Highlander. I’m inclined to go with the lifetime warranty injector just to get the Cruiser back in service so I can commute in that until I can get my Highlander serviced at the beginning of July. Then again, if I could just salvage the basket cap off the cheapo injector and keep the OE injector in I would like that the most.
Oh, I should add I’ve trolled through the various threads and was quite entertained with all the back and forth on more holes, less holes, and the scientific method.
I really don’t like the idea of tearing apart injectors that seem to work perfectly fine, but with 230k on the clock, I imagine the filter baskets might be a little dirty? I did run a bottle of Techron through it awhile ago… what’s the experience been with replacing the filter baskets with cheap Chinese replacements?
Anyways… roast me, question me, thank me, buy me a drink, I don’t care. Your thoughts?
