well it's a hell of a lot more effort than what I would want to do, and 150.00 isn't going to get it done. If you get it done definitely post it up.

Amen to the hell of a lot more effort than you'd want to do. I'm feeling like an optimist and this truck will never be a DD so it can sit while I'm working on the intercooler setup.

I have to take my time and plan it out carefully though as a lot of the time I have a "rip and tear with no despair" way of working on things. And I want the I/C to look as close to having been born on this truck as it can be. And geez, the thought of a functional hood scoop just makes me shiver with excitement! Form should always follow function in my book! And uh, non-functional hood scoops a-la 4Runners and Tacos, not so cool at all.

When you have the motivation to do something though it's so easy. At the end of my relationship with my '87 I swore if it gave me any more problems I'd of lighted it on fire I was so done with it!

The new truck though I'm excited about and have no reservations about sinking a lot of time and thought into improving upon the S/C's lack of intercooling.

I live for a cold, dense intake air charge!
 
I'm not partial to that design as there is no effect in a slow moving situation.

Here is what I would TRY to do.

First off I'd remove the casting from the blower and have a professional cut and weld the output so it faced forward.

Next, I'd turn 90* toward the second battery tray area where a nice Spearco 2-231 would be sitting there with both ports facing the drivers side.

In through the top port and out through the bottom where it would 90* back and then up to the intake.

Now plumb in the pump to the radiator and supply power.

I really like the liquid/air coolers as there is minimum pressure drop through the hose due to it's shorter run and packaging is much easier.

This setup IMO would be about perfect for these trucks and functional through out the operating range.

Slow moving linke wheeling? When wheeling (in low range), boost is not necessary IMHO. Plenty of gear advantage to take care of that. This was discussed in the blarsen thread as well. For me, the setup he has would work wonderfully as the boost is mostly needed when driving my overweight gal over mountain passes. That being said, I can't stomach chopping up the S/C bits to make it happen like Bret did. Maybe now that the kits are available, I can buy the necessary replacement parts and cut, cut, chop, chop. I definitely notice that during these hot summer months when things are toasty under the hood, most of the effective boost is lost.

I don't think boost is necessary in low range either but with a SC you get it anyway. So on top of the usual heat generated by the compressor you start to heat soak everything because the usual air flow from moving is gone. All the more reason for an intercooler I think.


That is actually one of the things I like about a Turbo, low range is basically an off switch for a turbo.

Further, the benefits that I'm looking for would also be for street driving and towing situations. Moreover, we could get creative with the installation of an electric cooling fan to help out in slow-speed situations.

Ken Romer did a JDM auxillary fan on his S/C LX (modeled after CDans version?) and it seems to be working well. He said it wasn't too difficult/time consuming either. I think this would be the option I would attempt first if necessary due to lower expense, ease of install, good performance, and possibly the lack of enough balls to cut into a 3K S/C. The functional hood scoop does look pretty sweet though.
 
Just thinking out loud, if the SC owners could tell me if it's correct

SC= $3500
Ron Davis Alum Rad = $900
Toyota aux fan = $under100

I remember someone rigged a old toyota aux fan which is an inexpensive option (not bolt-in but easy enough to mod)

RD alum radiator would bump the cooling capacity so could handle more heat...

In your opinions, would this be substantially improved for the additional $1000~?
 
1994 Toyota 80 new OEM radiator is $400. $300 cheaper than the 97 and a bolt in replacement. Some say its a better design, not to mention much cheaper. The point is to have a good rad without 12 years of gunk.

JDM fan was a little over $200
 
Nope, been discontinued for a month or so now, no remaining inventory in the U.S.
 
JDM fan is running about $350 right now I just bought one last month from dan.
