Blems?

better be careful with these things. Conceivable that they would have had a trial run done in China or someplace, got some, didn't like them and selling them off cheap?

I don't want to hear any of that "anyone got one of those inexpensive birfields they want to part with" business later on :D :flipoff2:

Eh could be blems or trial run Asian but I am thinking not. CV Unlimited is a full on manufacturer with their own equipment. Their production capability may be huge as in each time they run birfs. they make a 1000+. This is not all that uncommon in manufacturing or other business. The name brand stuff keeps the warrantee and high price yet they blow out the same part under a different name for a far cheaper price. I know they make all of Bobby Longs “new” birfs that he then beefs up and does his metallurgy treatment too. I don’t know for 100% but I am sure Profeilds etc. also start out from CV Unlimited. The key thing with this business model is to keep the low cost parts as far away from the high cost parts, so not to devalue the big $ parts. Not really working to well here since they are selling them themselves and using their own distribution system. (sales staff, e-mail etc.)

Ok now I think I will go buy a few from the e-bay dude before they raise the price!

Got me one.
 darned chatter here and elsewhere seems to be making them a bit more popular now than they used to be.

If nothing else, I'll have a trail spare tucked away.

Hasn't arrived yet, so I can't show-n-tell at this point.

IIRC a while back cvunlimited withdrew their newfields and went back to redesign because they were having problems. I would assume that they still have a warehouse full of the old birfs but are not prepared to warranty them or devalue their brand by selling them officially.

I guess these make sense as a trail spare but I would not use them as a permanent replacement for OEM.

the ebay posting states that they give a 7 year, 70,000 warranty.
if it is cvunlimited -- that's good enough for me.

if it's some fly-by-night operation, then the warranty is worthless.

that said, it's a pretty good price for a birf -- extra strength or not.

Which is why we usually move ebay type threads to parts wanted or for sale etc. Except in this case folks were asking for opinions. Probably should have moved it anyway.

I already have a few spare OEM birfields in the back of the truck anyway with inner axles and the spudlem of parts. I know folks get ticked when we move threads, but that's one of the reasons.

I'm not really mad about it. The price I ended up paying wasn't much higher than some of the earlier bids and I expected prices to go up once people noticed it. I've been watching the sales for a while now (before this was posted). Was curious about it and was keeping away, but it was a post on this thread that convinced me to pick one up. If it's any difference to you, I think it should stay here. Once I get one, I'll add to this thread (or start another one). If it's moved to the FS section, I think it'll die there.

Well I can't speak for the 80 birfs but I got my mini 79-85 birf today and it is definitely from CVUnlimited. The invoice says Stuckey Bros. Parts Co. CV Unlimited. Wtihin the invoice my part # reads CVP 8701 Toyota Newfield

The small box within the large shipping box is CVUnlimited 8701.

The bell has numbers on the outside that read EMPI TO - 128 1223

Inside the bell it has # Cf53 I don't know if this means anyting to anyone but if it does post up and lets hear if these are quality or cheapos.

The base of the bell has a pattern that looks like it was heated or something and it follows around the bearing holes, kind of looks like a flower pattern if that makes any sense. I attached some crappy pics to try to show this.

One more pic of outside. It has a dark ring around the top of the bell where it narrows up for the shaft.

It won't let me attach the pic. says I exceeded my quota of 66.5kb? I posted all on POR so if you want to see it go here

I agree with you...those are crappy pics!! :flipoff2:

Does the discoloration look like it's from heating (blueing?) or just stained metal? Does it buff off with some sand paper?

Damn. Ever try to take a closeup pic of a very reflective surface with a so-so camera? :flipoff2: try this pic Definitely heat treated, sanding is not going to take this off. I'll try to post a pic of the top of the bell where there is also a bluing heat line. The area on the spline end where the ring goes is also discolored but I can't get a good pic of that.

That birfield does not have an ABS ring.

B, that is because it's from a 79-85 minitruck.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse anyone. These are for 79-85 mini or 76+ FJ40. I only posted the pics here to give an idea of what this person is selling. He told me these were from Toyota and new. Turns out they aren't exactly either of those. Anyway, I got them for really cheap and wanted to let you guys know what he was selling before you spent much more than I did. Sorry for any confusion.

Did anyone notice that all the birfields on eBay have disappeared? At least I cannot find any listed.

Steve
