Hello mudders. Well time has come for my 80 engine. It was using oil and hg just let go. 228k miles.
1996 80. I was trying to achieve a 1 week hg job and all was going good. First thing the timing chain guide has a small tab where the tensioner push's on. Well that was broke. So off goes the front timing cover and oil pans. Then after cleaning the head deck I noticed on cylinder 1 the head gasket had burnt into the head deck around the front of firing ring. Not good. The block needs to be decked. So very long story short the engine is out.

SOooooo... What is everyone's suggestions on which way to go? New long block if so from where? Rebuild what I have? Used engine complete and slap new seals/etc on it and slap it in? (not many out there for sale)

I have A LOT of $ into my 80 so bailing isn't an option. This is the one of the last things that needs to be done and the truck will be going for many more miles. I have rebuilt almost everything else over the years. i'd like to get 10 yrs out of it and another 100k miles at least.

There was a NIB short block for sale in classifieds for 2900 not long ago.

First pic shows cylinder 1. Piston rings are grooved in. You can feel a descent indent in these spots
Second pic show deck damage. this is also cylinder 1. damage is prob more than 10 thousands deep.
Funny thing is the head gasket leaked externally on cylinder 6 and internally on cylinder 5.
Machinist says the engine was likely overheated. IDK.

Crazy the truck ran great. Never skipped a beat. Just smoked bad, used oil. I only noticed hg when I was checking fluids. Radiator was down about a gallon. Scangauge never went over 193*.

Could go the Cummins route, right? Or a Toyota diesel? I'm getting ready for a reinstall of my 1FZ engine and tranny and I think sometimes about other approaches I could have taken or might take in the future.

If it were mine I would just see if they could deck that block. I did exactly that with my 94 to remove fire ring pitting. New rings, honed cylinder walls and was good to go.

The machinist was saying I would need to bore and used over sized pistons. Did you have any ridges in the cylinders?

Thanks for the link.

Also what long blocks work for the 96? Is it 94-97?
But if I where to find a complete engine it would need to be 95-97?

Oem engine dud what wanted. I can't see spending 10k on a swap.

Looking at your 80 you have always been at the top of the food chain when it comes to mods, LSX someone needs to be first:D

Rockjock seems to always have an extra or knows a source for a used 1FZ

All cylinders will have a ridge of carbon built up on them. That's why they get a ridge reamer used on them but that's different from having them re bored. So yes I would expect to have the ridge re cut and you would need a step hone before you put new rings in, but the block only needs re bored if you have a cylinder that is overly worn. How do the cylinder walls look ?

Just buy a short block an from Toyota all your headaches are gone you have over 200k on it 1fze is a good engine I wouldn't change it put new valves guides spring an valves from toyota call it a d200k an done right an should be able to use factory inshino stone gasket set from parts geek

I wouldn't recmond the Cummins route its a fit problem turns into a hack job the v8 you can can do wit out. The 1fze is its home an good like a jumbo22re. supercharge it if you feel the need in the long run you will feel good. im in middle of my build I source everything from amazon ebay parts geeks an Toyota dealer. the osk chain set complete is 100 on ebay oil pump asmbly 250 on parts geek do you homework I know what I spend an i dnt bother to do it even if I have to wate the 80 is the best of them 1fze is good

Pics above. Cylinder one shows indent from rings. You can feel the steps with finger.

Here's where I'm at with my 97 LX and maybe it will help you make your decision:

-Need a new motor and have a spare that was running with 230k miles from a 96 being delivered to Valley Hybrids in Stockton, CA.
-Spare motor will have Cylinder Head pulled and at minimum, get head surfaced and new OEM HG.
-Possibility it will get complete rebuild with +1mm pistons and rings and prepped for Supercharger.

Here's the catch -- I can't help to think that the cost of a complete rebuild with SC would be close to complete LS or 1hz swap but I really don't know for sure because I've never seriously considered it.

Ummm ask Georg at Valley Hybrids, he can tell you what it would cost. lol.
