In need of an 1fz. Which direction to go?

If it were me, I would use mine, have it decked and bored, have the head rebuilt and touched up as necessary. I would only do minimum bore necessary to clean up cylinders and smooth the deck. Maybe go with a slightly thicker head gasket to keep the compression down for pump gas. Make sure that all ports for gaskets are smooth and clean transitions.

Has anyone ever sleeved a 1FZ block to maintain cylinder wall thickness an keep temps down? (dry sleeve)

How much are oversized pistins?

depends on name brand. Pistons, bearings, races and rings are 750 from my machinist. JE and CP pistons are considerably more but they are much better (mainly used for the FI guys).

Use Taiho bearing an cosmetic mls gaskets an ishino stone gasket set they have different thickness to work out with machinist far as removal of material a used block you would be doing the same the gaskets are over 20 years old

Just hone it put new rings on it (Toyota) deck the block do the head an change bearing if feel needed. if you go start buying everything pistons an add labor etc look at buying Toyota short block if you going bore over you need possibly smaller pulley photoman has them for w pump they do tend go a little warmer when you start changing from stock size

If you don't compensate with a thicker gasket she will ping under load up hills etc give cosmetic a call if you have questions on it they do gaskets on the 1fze an other yotas

Hey when u Pull the cams label bag the buckets an shims too wit indvual bags since your not using all new valves just trying help

I accidentally tipped head over in back of my truck and all buckets fell out.....eesh

When I took my 300k block to the machine shop they needed bigger than .020"/.5mm pistons and couldn't find them. The next step was 1mm Factory over bore pistons CruiserDan sourced for me. They weren't cheap. I do like the new power, but after about $5k in parts and mostly my work I wonder if an LS swap would have been worth the time and trouble.

5k!!! Damn. That's nit the way I want to go. Trying to source a used engine at this point. Trying to get a hold of cruisrtparts in NH

I might 5k for rebuild without labor.

2500 is getting my head machining, valve job, block decking over bore, pistons, bearings, balance and polish crank, hot ta k various items.

Add in 500 for misc tools cleaners ect and I'm at about 3 k right now

I just processed through the same questions you are having. You can see how it went for me.... 1FZ-FE Rebuild - Restoring my FZJ80 from an early demise

The 1FZ is a really cool engine. If you decide to rebuild it, you will see why. It's beefy. Almost everything is overkill. It's built to be reliable and, in my opinion, if you resolve it's Achilles heel, the head gasket, it should last forever.

If you are planning to do the labor of this project yourself, it is likely much cheaper to rebuild the 1FZ than do a swap. Even a lowly 5300 vortec and 4l60 is VERY expensive when you're all said and done.... engine, trans, xfer case adapter, engine mounts, custom exhaust, wiring harness, cooling system customization, etc, etc.... let alone an LSX and 6l80. If you want the power and have the cash, go for it!

Even with a Cometic head gasket and ARP studs, my 1FZ build was still at around $3K (in parts and machine services), which included A LOT of replacing/refreshing the ancillaries (cooling system, heater, power steering, trans flush, xfer flush, new engine mounts). I can send you a spreadsheet of all the parts and services and costs for the project. I was however able to reuse my pistons and rods.

I am extremely pleased with how it turned out. A fresh 1FZ is extremely smooth and willing and I have no regrets. As a huge bonus, I understand my truck much better and am better prepared if anything ever happens while we're on the trail.

Well I am picking up a fully rebuilt engine tomorrow. Top to bottom. From a good friend. He was holding out on me... ha. Should be up and going shortly. Just have to drop off the intake tomorrow to get hot tanked. Can't wait.

Can't pass that up! Great!

Talk to Beno, get a rebuild kit. Punch it out to 4.6L.
Worth keeping your engine, just med the time to do it.
Message me if you have questions, I did mine within the post 3 years.

When I said $5k that included a lot of extra stuff that came up during the rebuild-alternator, steering pump, etc. I also did a lot of additional work to the exhaust, brakes and driveshafts.

Yup I get you there. Being down for an engine out rebuild means the owner is sitting idle, which often leads to online purchases and a total refresh.

I am about 5k into my 'refresh' right now and could put another 3 into her pretty easily.

I hear that in at like 8grand an rode for 5 mins an picked it up for 2 94 wit lockers I rUN numbers back in forurth an wo numbers on amazon parts geek an google I replace all an any exhaust hardware gaskets etc new Denso compressor alternator 230 Denso cold start Denso starter photo man bracket all new hoses new shroud f clutch shroud real radiator new master I can keep going did double din an them dam seats in chasing replace switchs an plaststic gears an now gear box on driver everybody knows me at dealer been hittn it for 13years I got new block waitn open ticket 1 dollar for warranty starts I replace EVERYTHING get 10 above cost a lot of time if its for 80 I ride out of the country b in the bush beach snow storms mountains 80 is the best
