Improve those darn cup holders!!

OK, I admit it.. I haven't found a place that sells the exact size cup I need to fit in to the cup holders and not tip over.

Seriously, has anyone modified theirs to work better!? I think they just need to be deeper, actually.. and tapered so that any cup put in them would be held around the circumfrence of the cup and not just sit on the "floor" of the cup holders and move around.

What is under them? Is there enough room to cut out the bottoms and extend them? I'm gonna investigate more and make them work!

Mine works just fine .. simply adjust the ratchet thingy to fit the cup size and you should be good to go.

Its an insert that goes in the center of the cup well ... slides in and out for ease of cleaning. Should have a ratchet thingy for the driver and one for the passenger...

looks like two curved index fingers on a hinge... unlike two straight middle fingers

Humm.. I guess I'll have to drive by the dealer tomorrow. Wonder if the cup holders themselves are the same size and the ratchet is an insert into that? Or if you need all new cup holders. We'll see if the parts people know anything.

Yes you do. My old '98 had them, and so does my '04, so you must have them in your '00.

Are you sure they weren't a stealer add-on?

(Do you remember seeing an invoice item for about $300 or so for some interior option? That would be about a typical stealer markup on a cupholder insert...hehe)

My '99 LX has plain cupholders, no ratchety thingy. (At least not in the front ones - the rear have a Rube Goldberg design built into the pullout drawer.)

There was a whole thread on this. I have had 3 99s and not one had the ratchey thing for the cup holders. And yes, the 99 cupholders are some of the saddest on the planet. THe ratchey thing is a whole replacement unit for like 200 or more dollars.

I think it was a distributor add-on. You see them on eBay every now and then listed as a "butterfly" insert, for a bout $20.

I have a 2000 lc. I have a ratchet thing on the cup holder. It's a piece in the middle that you can take out, clean, move around to fit all sizes of cup or mug.

yeah when i had my 98 i remember how bad the cup holders were. i took the ratcheting thingy from the dealer out of a newer LC and tried to fit it in my 98. it didnt fit. so i was stuck with the crummy cupholders.

Data point: got the "rachety thingies" in the `04. It was purchased in May of 2004 at Maita Toyota in Sacramento, CA, so its port of entry was probably LA. I know sometimes there are regional differences in features/options, as well as port-specific installed items.
