I have a friend considering buying a rig that has a Canadian title. It is already in the US, but has a Canadian title. It is a 1969 and it is in Oregon. Does anyone know the protocol or hoops you need to jump through? Let me know anything you might know... Thanks in advance...

Call up a registered importer. Shouldn't be too hard.

Title is signed by the Canadian owner? It will probably have to go back across the border and it's likely the import paperwork will also have to be signed by the Canadian owner.

Other than that it should be pretty easy. Not a lot of reason to go through an importer. Google knows what forms you need.

I'd use an importer if there was anything weird about the deal, including if it was right at 25 years old, to prove date of manufacture, or if it was RHD.

The vehicle is in the US and so is the owner. It is just titled in Canada. BC to be specific...

I just called the Oregon DMV and this is what they said is needed. Let me know if this sounds about right. Would suck to spend a bunch of money and then not get it titled...
-VIN Inspection at DMV
-Title or most likely for BC would be a Certificate of Registration and has two parts. Both parts are needed.
-Release of interest on that Certificate and a bill of sale
-Customs form from when it crossed into the US. Form CF7501 or CBP7501. Signed and stamped by customs.

Sound right?

See in new Hampshire we Don"t need a title we just write a bill of sale for vehicle that is older than 25 years old so if you can get away with it, say you Don"t have title write a bill of sale . The vin for a Canadian truck is that any different for USA vin.if not just make a bill of sale if you can reg it without a title

Customs form you mentioned is easy to obtain. All they do is verify that the rig is over 25 years old and thus exempt. No need for an importer unless you've got money your tired of having sit in your bank account.

Can you still get that document even if the rig is in Oregon already. The border is 6 hours away and the vehicle is not running. Not very easy to get it there for any type of inspection....

I believe Portland is an international airport and as such will have US customs there. Contact them and ask. I'd bet chalk for cheese they can do it.

You may need the owner to go with you or at least have a Bill of Sale with you. A Power of Attorney for that action should suffice too I'm guessing.

Don't mean to be a downer, but they sometimes have no sense of humor if it came to and was sold in the US without proper customs authorization. You may want to make some discreet inquiries before identifying yourself.
