Mine won't lower if I watch it with the insert out. It only raises it.
Thanks, that is the same issue I am having. One of these days I guess I'll pull her apart. I don't use recirculate often but still want it to work.

When raised, it is in recirculate mode.

Just sayin'...

Depending on how your door is broken it may not be too difficult to repair.. I documented my fix here:

Well.... My A/C/heat has worked fine since I've had the truck (only a few weeks).

Went and checked the door per the instructions in the post - and the door isn't functional. I also don't hear any buzzing like it's attempting to open or close. It was closed when I opened the little door and then pushed the recirc button and the door opened. But then it would not close again.
Also... now the "OFF" button doesn't work on the blower. It worked before. If I have it all the way up (blower speed) and push the off button it just lowers it to the lowest fan speed but won't go OFF all the way. I didn't force anything and didn't do anything to break it so now I'm really confused. I should've just lived with not-knowing about the recirc door because now I've got a larger problem.

Maybe not. The HVAC system will not turn completely OFF if your Cool Box in the center console is not turned OFF. Check your Cool Box, turn it off, then try the OFF button on the dash and see if you have a better result.

You were correct... Thanks a ton!! I was worried I messed something else up haha.

Also I tried the recirc door again and it WILL open with the button press but will not close with the button. Also I can hear a small click/tap like it's trying to close but can't.

Alright! Score one for the good guys!

No doubt your recirc door is broken - I can't fix that one for you...

Damn the OCD kicked in and I walked down to the LX with my headset on (work from home) and dug around a little more. As I previous mentioned the recirc/fresh door moves up, it will not move down. Nice bright flashlight and I can see the actuator rotate however pin will not engage the door in the downward direction. It looks like the pin moves in and out on lowering and raising.

So the good, the mechanical aspect of this works, other than driving though aroma I don't recirc. The bad this is going to drive me slightly bonkers until I fix it. I am hoping when I re read a couple of these threads I can somehow get the pin engaged and it will be fixed.

Ok so I have the same situation but I couldn't see any pins or anything... But I'm at work and don't have time to really get in there and look. Please update us if you figure out how to remedy and I'll do the same.

Thanks, the joys of working from home or traveling. Reading a couple of these threads leads me to believe the glove box area needs to be take apart to access the "bits". The work doesn't look to difficult just more of a pain rear. I am hoping I can get a hand up when removing the bottom panel (AB?) and just push it in place.

OCD in full force, I tried a couple of long skinny slotted screw drivers, a fillet knife etc. Anything to hold the pin in place and into the hole in the door. Finally started taking the glove compartment apart, first the lower panel with clips, a light and some sensor. I looked around and there is no room for my large hands, believe me I tried. I placed a light in the fan assembly and cycled the pin and tried to get my phone shoved in there for some video. My hope was to see what I might be dealing with nada.

Looking before too much unscrewing I noticed that behind the ?ECU there is a 10mm screw holding a black relay to the white plastic blower assembly. That relay was right where needed to stick my hand. After removing the screw I moved the relay to the side wriggled (in a technical manner) my fingers cursed (in a non technical manner) through the looms and crap. Next I cycled the recirc button hoping to feel something. I could feel the pin or something moving, I pushed and the pin snapped into the hole in the door and she cycles.

Knowing what I know now this is a 1 beer "repair". I ordered a new cabin filter and will follow up in a few days but I feel confident the way she snapped into place.

You are one of the lucky ones that just had the pin push out.. glad it worked. My door was cracked near the pin hole, as shown in the pics in my thread.

For those that can’t clearly see a crack on the end of the door, definitely try what @speyrod did.

Well, mine was broken. I’d always had the foggy windows problem unless the A/C was on. I never realized why until I stumbled across this thread. I checked, and sure enough some ham fisted tech broke it to replace the air filter. The previous owner probably even paid for this luxurious service. Mine was broken similarly to TonyP’s, where 1/4 of the circumference of the hole was broken away and the rest of the tab was broken. I used JBweld 2part plastic weld epoxy and first patched the broken tab part up. Once that was dry, I carefully coated the remaining inside of the keyed hole of the cover and manually inserted the shaft back into the hole. The epoxy squeezed out, and I covered all the remaining edges where the hole and shaft mate. It has dried, and functions as designed. Recirculating and fresh air now work as designed. Sure, it’s permanently mated now, but if it ever breaks it’s probably time to replace it anyways, which was put off by this repair anyhow. Win win.

For those of you with broken doors, the repair is pretty simple, just be careful with the epoxy application and it will go fine.

I am going to take another look at my door which I know is broken this weekend.

Looking online, the motor and fan blade assembly drops out of the entire “assembly” within the dash.

With that being said - perhaps dropping the motor and fan out of the bottom would open up some more room to work?

Either way, I am going to get some angled needle nose pliers and plastic epoxy and try and Bandaid mine. I’ll shroud it in paper and be delicate with the application and hope for the best.

I’d also recommend Mass air flow cleaner. It will spray off any oil or debris from the area without leaving a film, making sure any epoxy adheres as well as it can. Some popsicle sticks will be handy to spread the epoxy.

Just re-checked mine. Works perfect. Not broken.

Thanks for the heads up. Mine works like a champ. That's probably because the filter was dirty as hell so my dealer has obviously never touched it.

In this case, dirty filter is a good thing. :)

The 2018 comes with this sticker on the cabin filter door inside the glove box. Toyota calls it the AC Filter.

Perhaps the dealership is putting these stickers on older models when they come in for service or you can get one to put in yourself.

Interestingly, it appears to be in English, Arabic and Russian which must be the 3 biggest markets for the Land Cruiser.

My 2016 has that sticker.
