hi all,

went to change oil in hdj81 today, ordered filter from Toyo dealer turned out to be wrong one (15600-41010). Found this out after wrecking the old one getting it off, lesson learned? use the right tool for the right job.

no problem ordered the right one (90915-30002) but truck is sitting in driveway useless until it comes in. btw $35 for this filter, have to shop around.

went to Shell today and picked up a case of Rotella 5w40 syn (4x4L) for $92.

so I'm gonna change the oil and filter now at 160000km, send away an oil analysis ($18 from Shell) at 165000km and again at 170000km to try and determine best oil change interval for me.

will keep you informed.

think I'll try and find a tool that is big enough to get the friggin filter off too...

Hi gowyn,

What a coincidence, I stopped at NAPA this morning.

They couldn't x-ref the 90915-03006 or 90915-30002 that the EPC indicated I should use. But did supply a NAPA Gold 1515 ($5.77 CAD plus taxes and environment fee) as a x-ref for the 15600-41010 that others have said would fit the 1HD-T.

The 1515 looks smaller than the one currently on my cruiser (all Japanese writing; no English), but I was planning to use it this weekend.

When you say that the 15600-41010 wouldn't fit, do you mean that the threads or seal were different, or was it just an canister size difference?

What do others use in their 1HD-T?

-Steve

the actual hole on the inside of the filter (threaded) is too small, the 30002 hole has got to be almost an inch whereas the 41010 is much smaller.

physically the 41010 is narrower than the 30002.

the filter I took off had the p/n on it, same as catalogue.

should have read through the forums on this beforehand, would have left the existing filter on until I had the right tool. d'oh!

The filter used on the 1HD-T is actually exactly the same filter used for the 2L, 2LT, 2LTE, 1KZT, 1KZTE, 1HD-FT and 1HD-FTE.

If you find one for any of these it is exactly the same. I use FRAM filters on mine (always used them since I worked in a garage 28 years ago). They are well made, heavy (means they actually have some filtration stuff in them worth having) and I have never had a problem with the seal leaking. Only time I ever didn't use a FRAM filter the thing loosened off and dumped oil everywhere (and yes I did do it up tight enough).

Whatever filter you use, if it isn't heavy, it isn't any good.

So what is the fram part #?

yes, it is the same filter as the L series which is probably why the bottom ends last so long on the tiny engines...

SAY AWAY FROM FRAM FILTERS!

They are the worst filters out there. Don't take my word for it. Do a search or look it up on the internet. They are constantly rated as the worst quality amoung leading filters and they have reliability problems.

Stick with the NAPA gold or OEM.

What about Baldwin, Luber-Finer, or Fleetguard? they have some decent OEM equivalent filters for under $10 US...

When I was down at my local Toyota dealer getting a dash light I asked about a OEM filter. They said they could get me one and the price would be $12 or $17 canadian. I can't remember which.

I have also heard that Fleetguard filters are good. I think they are available from Finning.

As already said, stay away from FRAM.

Interesting that one, I did see something on the web when I was looking for the part number about a batch of them being recalled. As I said earlier, I have never had any problems with FRAM, they also make filters for other people.

Still if you have had bad experiences then that goves you reasons. I can only go on my own experience with them which has been good.

Here is a page where they open up many popular filters and show you whats inside.

Also here is a statement from a guy that used to work at FRAM as an engineer:

Don't think I'll be using them again. Good to know, although I've never had problems, guess I could have just been lucky.

Might have to use genuine from now on, as we don't get that much choice really apart from some unknown make Japanese cheap ones, Fram, Motaquip and Genuine here.

Hey pedro,

I have not ordered a new filter yet.
Allthough I will go OEM when I do.
Not sure of the part number. I think there is a thread on mud about this.
I have a OEM filter right now, so I will double check the part number with Toyota before I order it.

We still need to together and have you take the 81 out. Just have to wait for my starter now. I hope I have a working truck for the weekend.

Cheers,
Nick

that was the price of the "wrong" one they sold me. The 30002 is a double filiment filter according to the one I took off.

I returned the NAPA Gold 1515 this morning and picked up a Baldwin BD7029 at Coast Industrial Parts in Victoria for $29.59 CAD, plus environment fee and taxes - ouch!

Thanks to swixtt for the part number. Actually, I was looking for the FleetGuard, but Coast Industrial was nearby and they xrefed the FleetGuard to the Baldwin. Will try it out this weekend.
