What about buying a new OEM rod and filing off the steering lock tab? Has anyone ever done that? That way you get a new beefier rod and no steering lock to mess with. Or pull out the original and file off the tab and reinstall it?

I'm not exactly sure what the "spring" and the "steering lock tab" on the rod?

It’s still pot metal… do you trust like that?

In addition to the wheel lock issue, I’m conscious of how much I turn the key while starting. It’s easy to turn with too much force and not necessary. No other car do I experience this, but also I don’t get on forums talking about starting techniques with those.

Don’t forget about how many problems seem to arise after opening up a can of “preventative maintenance” worms.
