Simple question-
Has anyone ever had a locksmith make a key for a ignition key cylinder when you did not have the original key or a key at all?
Second question-
How do you get the cylinder out of the housing. I removed the small clip in the back, but is there something else that holds it in place?

There is a pin that needs to be depressed out of the way, but can only be done when the key is in the cylinder and turned to the accessory position, iirc.

And really if it's worn out, just replace it. I seem to remember that getting a locksmith to make a new key when you don't have the original, was way more money than a new cylinder which comes with a new (sometimes 2) keys. Hey new shiny stuff is never bad.

key

so without a key I can't remove the cylinder to replace it??:bang:

so anyone got any lock picking tools for sale? Oh, I will also need some training in that area was well. LOL

a locksmith would make quick work of it - just sayin'

I was in the same position and I had a locksmith do it in less than 30 seconds. Cost $55 total for the call out and 2 keys.

When I upgraded my 40 to a later model column with the plastic housing and the upgraded turn signal / dimmer switch I got a new ignition and lock switch too. Of course the column I bought had no key. I decided to just switch it out. It was a lot less money then and I just swapped out the old with the new. I seem to remember there is a way to get the lock cylinder out of the ignition switch without needing the key. There HAS to be, otherwise what do you do? Replace the entire thing?

As for the price I clicked on the pic of the door lock not the ignition. Sorry for the confusion.

What part number are you looking at that is applicable to this?

Further, without getting the correct key into the tumbler, you cannot just remove the old one and install the new one.

:meh:

You're right of course. SOR part number 144-001C but it's $126.00 Not really all that bad if your current lock won't hold the key in any more and you need a new key made for a lock you don't have a key for.

A good key shop will be able to look up the code based from your VIN. Or was it the make model and year. Anyway, my ignition key was old and warn. The locksmith looked up the code in his magical book and cut me a new key.

a buddy gave me a new tumbler and keys and i think i just drilled the little nub thing and the old one came out new one snapped right in

final truth about key cylinders

Truth- the passenger side door look has the key code stamped on the side of the cylinder. a Locksmith that specilizes in auto can take that code and make a key.

Truth- you can remove the key cylinder with the key inserted and in the run position. without the key in you can not depress the release pin far enough to remove the cylinder.

Truth- a locksmith can make a key for a cylinder and even change the key code to match the door.

I had a key cylinder from a 74 column, with no key, I had a door key cylinder from a 77 with no key. I had to cut the housing on the 74 column to remove the cylinder ( I was not using the 74 column but needed the cylinder).

I removed the door lock from the passenger side of the 77 door., it did have a code stamped on it.
I took both to the locksmith that did automobiles and it only took him a short while and $40 bucks later I had both the door and the ignition column cylinder keyed the same and had two bright new keys.

Just thought this would help someone in the future.

under the brass tab on top of the lock is that pin,i believe if you remove the tab the pin is under it and can be removed .its been a while so im going from memory here.have to grind the rivet off.

Hellllllp.
I was trying to replace my lock cylinder on my '81 fj43 and came across some issues and needs some help. When I bought it years ago it came with the one that is on it. Not service the original one or not. Looks like it might be but not quite sure. It does not have the lock on it in the key falls right out so I decide to change it with a new one. I went to toyotapartsdeal.com and ordered Toyota part number 69057-90800 lock cylinder with key set and it verified that it would fit a 1980 to 1982 fj40. It was $130 and it did not fit at all. Does anyone know where I could find a lock cylinder that will actually fit with new keys? And any reason why the one I bought part number I mentioned above didn't fit? I thought you could put a locked cylinder type or non locking on. I guess not. Can someone please help me find the right part? Right now I have no lock cylinder. It's just stuck in. It doesn't work so I mounted my ignition switch in a hidden location thanks for your help.

Oh I broke the one I took out. I also try removing the lock portion of the new cylinder to install it but once I did that the key lock itself into the cylinder so I guess it's trashed. Not sure if I can get it out, I'll do anything with it.

The picture shown is the original 1 truck came with
