Idler gear shaft O ring

??? Can the transfer case idler gear shaft be pulled out far enough to replace the O ring or does everthing inside fall apart ??? May 1977 FJ55 original box

My concern would be that #14 thrust washer would slip down and make getting the shaft back in difficult, I would smear some RTV on the outside of the shaft to slow the leak and pull the case after the party if I wasn't prepared to pull it before.

Hard part would be buffing out the case for the Show N' Shine.

So far 2 land cruiser mechanics have said it doable. I don't think I'm going to try it before the PP. Might try a blend of above mention suggestions like maybe green slime, if it works for tires it should be fine in a T case
