Bought this at auction sight unseen. $7700. It came from NE and I'm in TX so my mechanic is not used to seeing rust of any kind, but he told me run, don't walk. Any thoughts?

Please feel free to weigh in on idiot vs moron.

You want honesty? here it is,you are an Imbecile (not literally) for purchasing without taking the time to do your homework.
I would give you $1500 so i can part it out. I do feel sorry for you man for being taken like that,Karma will get whoever sold you that POS.

Does it have or need a road license so you can drive around?
Clean it, have some fun driving, see what else it needs and if it is suddenly considered a part out learn some welding.
Happens to many of us, no need to drown in bad sentiment.

I would not worried too much about rust on a component (sway bar and shock on pic no 4). These most likely need to be replaced, rust or not due to age. Pic no 5 showing a broken plastic shield - no biggie, but is that a hole on the background? I cant tell for sure. Pic no 6 is showing a hole - I cant tell what that is, but that does not look good. I would check the frames to make sure you do not have rust thru holes and go from there. Look like you have rust on the frame here and there (pic 1-3). Maybe you paid a bit too much, but honestly it does not look too bad from what the picture - I have seen worse in my area - Kentucky and Ohio.

Your mechanic has already answered your question....

No one is going to be able to give you as good of an answer from pics
Over a professional who saw it in person....

Don't beat yourself up too bad over it. Here is my take coming from the NE, inspect all of your suspension mounting points for cracks or weakness. That will be a killer. Clean all the flaky rust of with a hose and scraper and wire wheel the rest then slap some paint on. That will buy you some time. Do you have any maint records on this truck? Hopefully you have some mechanical knowledge. I would try not to put too much $ into this. When it needs major repairs part ways. If the body is still good most dealers never look underneath and will still give 1500$ over kbb fair trade. Remember one mans junk is another mans treasure. I sold my 96 4runner with 225k a bad head gasket, extensive rust and a broken shock mount in 2 days on craigslist. The buyer said he didn't care that he would fix it. IMO the fully boxed frame can have rust holes on one side and still be somewhat strong.

@bctlex I believe pic 6 is the rear fender area. I have the same rust hole on mine. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think you are correct that pic 6 is rear fender area. The pipe must be AC condensation tube (?) I do not have rear AC, so mine do not have this.

It's a tank, drive it until it drops.

Have you ever been to a demolition derby, could be fun.

Or perhaps use it for a 30mm canons target practice.

Or do some good with a car bash for charity.

Yes, the rust looks really bad. So "own" it. Don't worry too much about it for now. And, I'd even do some mods - bolt-on mods. As long as anything you do to it, can be taken off and put on the next one, e.g. rack, bumpers, suspension, wheels/tires... I wouldn't think of that as wasted - think of this one as the test mule... since you'll be moving the parts over to the next one in a few years. I think the best advice was from @sean2202 - when it needs major repairs, part ways.

I'm with @2001LC - do the 30mm cannon thing!

No seriously - if you bought you own it. Start using it and fix things as you go. Will likely turn out to be a fun experience.

:)

Just out of curiosity what auction did u get it at? E-bay or other? If you can warn others of the seller. Get yourself a can of kroil penetrating oil as well.

You both have eyes of hawks, right on both counts.

ebay. seller has actually been pretty decent about the whole thing and he's pretty forthright about the fact that they don't do through inspections. this one is all on me. no ebaying while drinking.

Bought mine with a bit of rust.....my rear upper quarter panels look like yours, and I've got a body guy that's going to fix that and my rocker panels for me. My transmission cross bar member looks like yours, but you can buy a new or used one and replace that. The other stuff looks like suspension components etc. Put it on a lift and scrape the hell out of all the bad areas. Then buy VHT rust inhibitor spray off Amazon and coat everything, then over spray that. As long as the frame isn't rusted out just repair and reinforce those areas.

Do the best you can with it and make it yours. Or sell it and take the hit.

To me, Pic 5 is VERY SCARY (the one showing the lift pad)! That is major frame damage. If that spot is rusted clean through the bottom of the frame it's probably almost thru in a much larger area.

I got taken once on e-bay motors that is why I asked. The seller conveniently left damage just outside of the pictures. I heard recently that www.carvana.com is decent and e-bay is at the low end. To make you feel better I have seen an 03 from mass that the frame was so rusted the whole thing was flaking. It looked like it was sunk in the ocean.

This looks like near the front cab mount. I'd start here with a ball peen hammer follow that rust area and see how far it goes
