I want my 80 to last forever, but...

At the current rate and the price I paid for the 80 it basically makes no sense to get ride of the FJ80. Minivan or another street SUV will be in the family one of these days(might be sooner than later) but the 80 will be my beater and offroad rig. Simply don't see myself spending almost 20k on a nice 100 and then have custom free pin stripe the next day. Plus 80 is heck a lot easier to fix on the trail.

Which means.......I get to lift it higher, possibly bigger tires, no more side step, sliders, bumpers, lockers.......... No more restrictions that kept me at OME factory height lift at the first place, one of these days my 80 will be nicely built and all mine!:bounce::hhmm::steer:

And my Prius keeps my gas bill nice and low.:D

My 80 is a third car, and while you 1FZ guys have it made, if you have a 91 then Mr. T was tweaking and there are some parts that have already disappeared (rear washer pump or heater divertor valve). On the upside, the old 3FE is an iron horse and seems to just keep going.

I will agree the electronics and wiring will be the hard thing to keep up.

I also like the new 5th gen 4Runners and would put them more on par with the LC chassis style IMHO. The new 200s are just WAAYYYY too big for my taste.

If I were to replace the 80 at all the 4runner and 100 is how I would go. 200 is way too expensive and WAY to freaking huge! If I want a mini van I'll get a mini van and get 25mpg too.

Don't think the 200 is practical even on the fireroads, just about impossible to do a pass let along get on real trails. Even the 80 already feels big on fireroads.

Exactly what I've done, my Cruisers, including my current 80 series have always been parked for the winter, insured in the summer as weekend vehicles. I currently daily drive a Nissan Sentra, saves gas, it's cheap to insure, and best of all I won't care if some inattentive commuter smashes into it and writes it off - which can happen fairly easily if someone hits your 14 year old 80 series. I would find the loss of my 80 fairly devastating...:crybaby:

Newest 80 series would be 16 years old... Just sayin' :D

I feel like this is one of the purposes of forums like MUD. As parts are discontinued or become too expensive, people will find solutions and post them. The GM charcoal canister thing is a great example. Just the other day I saw a guy gauging interest in making hard to find plastic parts with a 3D printer. Personally, I'm not too worried about being able to maintain my 80 for a long time. If I get to where that's no longer feasible I'll probably pick up a used 4 door Rubicon.

I think an 80 is not such a good DD. Too expensive in fuel and just puts on extra miles. Always good to have an 80 as a second vehicle that is for fun. I have had my 80 2yrs and put on about 7k miles (has 205k). I put all my daily miles on a 7.3 powerstroke and my lady and son roll in a 05 4runner. I figure at the rate I am at I will be giving my 2 yr. old son the 80 when is ready for wheeling. Should have around 310k miles (son at 17)if I stay at the same rate. Oh and BTW I love my 80!!!!

i think i didn't make my point well enough. gas mileage isn't an issue. the 80 isn't an issue.

my simple question should have been, it it wasn't an 80, what would you drive?

I would drive an lx-450

And if Money was no issue...

5th Gen 4Runner or new Tundra CrewMax

Neither of which are Land Cruisers.

He didn't limit the discussion, but to your point I would do a Slee SAS'd hundy.

WTF, that is definitely not a Land Cruiser, now I want a Unimog. No really I want one, been looking at them for a towing and camping rig on and off for a while, figure when I own more than a tenth of an acre I will get serious about it.

I drive a 2010 Taco TRD double cab as my DD and the 80 on the weekends. I love the Taco, but the LC is my mistress!! Don't know what it is about this old beast, but I love driving it.

If you really want one PM me and I'll put you in touch with someone who imports them.
