I got a 1HZ NA Diesel. When the truck is cold and i put it in "D" it takes 30 seconds of sluggish and very slow movement at higher rpms before the truck starts going like it should. If i put it however in "R" or "L" or "2" then its no problem even for 5 seconds and after that i put it in "D" and its all good. I have talked to my Land Cruiser mechanic from a local shop, he suggested it might a pump in the tranny and if it doesnt produce enough pressure at first or until the vehicle is at operating temperature it will result in what i have. Any other thought? Thanks:confused::confused::confused:

truck in question just because

Start by checking the shifter linkage is adjusted properly. If it's the later a442 with the 6 position shifter then I'd move onto the shift solenoids, then the valve body.

Low pressure pump related problem would be fairly easy to diagnose by hooking up a pressure gauge since it's not totally an intermittent fault.

Thanks, well I brought to the shop since I have no time to diagnose it due to work and it happens to be "neutral safety switch" which is $420:(. Anyways should be fixed any day now.

I'm curious about the diagnosis as my understanding of what the NSS does has nothing to do with putting the rig in "D" and not having it go...Did you get the rig back yet?

I'm a little suspicious that the neutral safety switch won't fix it as well. Hopefully we will get an update.

agree not the nss......

The NSS relays all gear positions to the transmission computer and is used to light up the position indicator on the dash.

Not sure if it could cause this problem, but it's not just there so you can't start it in gear.

Sorry for long. Update. But yes it was neutral safety switch. Runs good now. Thanks to all

I had the exact same problem. I mean exact.

Slips in first. Fine in R, 2, or L. After 5sec in R/2/L, D works fine.

My issue was a water in a transmission connector right above the starter. I wonder if the circuit affected was the NSS.

1994 is the year of the make

If the problem comes back, check your shift solenoids. https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-...n-issue-my-new-93-hdj81-help-suggestions.html

Symptoms Observed:
Intermittant: on trails and off road, there have been a few times where I start driving and it feels like the trans is slipping. The engine tries hard, but barely moves the vehicle forward. It seems to happen when going up hills, but the hills are NOT extreme in any way. By dropping it into Neutral, then back into gear, it starts acting normal again. Once, I just paused for about 5 seconds and pressed the accel again and it acted normally.
