Again - Do your homework (just search mud for blown diff,etc) 98/99 2pinion diffs have been reported to grenade for seemingly no reason, driving down the road, in snow conditions or other situations not considered 4wheeling at all. Toyota recognized this part as prone to failure and replaced it with the much stronger 4pinion design. Looking at the two side by side it's quite evident the 4pinion unit is a heavier duty unit.

The 2pinion diff does make a cool paperweight for the desk or a nice garage ornament.

+1 for the ARB upgrade. IMHO, its worth it to know that you have a front diff designed to handle the loads it will be put under. It is expensive, but I figured how much would I pay to have it if my front diff failed 20 miles up a trail in the Cascades? Done now, and I drive/sleep better knowing it.
 
I had my front diff blow in the worst situation. I ended up pulling the front end in a mud pit with a tornado on the way and pouring rain with lighting ontop of a mountain. I was the only one out there (the other rig left to get tools and got lost) so I ended up with a hammer, pliers, and a single 14mm open end wrench. It was the worst 2 hours of my life.
 
I had something similar happen to my LX. Turned out to be the axle flange on the passenger side was stripped. If you turn on the CDL does the noise go away?
 
Add me to the blown diff club. Good excuse to re-gear to 4.88's, upgrade to 34" Toyo's and add a front locker. Best mods I've done to the rig to date.

Hindsight, a torch and a claim would of been much easier. Can't wait to join you guys in Ouray again. I'll be back. ARB's being the first mod.

I do hope sailors situation is sorted out. A nice used front diff to get him back on the road would be awesome for him!
 
Update, still waiting for my mechanic to get back to me, he explained he had alot on his plate before I brought my vehicle in and it may not be till this upcoming Tuesday that he can get mine on a lift to look at it. Good news is though he said he's gonna do the labor for me super cheap since he's a family friend. Hopefully more news next week!
 
UPDATE. Front diff is blown. So I gotta question, should the rear not wanting to move either also be a symptom of the front diff? Mechanic sseemsto think something is wring with my transfer case but is not sure. If so does anyone have a transfer case? *
 
Does the rear diff move with the driveshaft removed? How about the t-case? Usually it's just the front diff that gets damaged.

Is your t-case in low? is the CDL engaged if it's in high? What does it do while in neutral?

You should have done a lot of this before sending it off to your mechanic, unless he's doing his diagnosis for free. Is your mechanic a Land Cruiser guy or just some random mechanic that works on Camry and Accord?
 
Every time someone on here has blown the front diff, they said they disconnected the front and locked the CDL, forcing power to the rear. From what in understand, it's the only way to get moving while the front diff is blown. Good luck!

Sign up for AAA. Tow it to ACC Toyota in Decatur. Get your LX in good hands and let the pro's work on it. Your tech spinning the back wheel saying your transfer case is blown should be a red flag that you are about to get a hefty repair bill in 4 months when he figures out what's going on with it and orders more parts than needed and installs half of them.
 
Well hes no specialist in landcruisers but he does a great job with other 4x4s and I trust him. Hes the type of mechanic that if something goes wrong, I can call him and he will be there as soon as possible no matter what the time. But I do plan on going up and doing some of the work mmyselfand trying what tall have told me. Also hes a family ffriend so he won't try and screw me on labor and parts

Just to think simple first...... Is the t case in "N" or the E brake on?

What does he mean by "not want to move"? Like, it's bound up? As in, up on a lift and he's spinning a rear tire, or is he spinning the driveshaft by hand?
 
Got a differential on the way from benc! Thank yall guys, I'll know more in a few days and keep ya updated
