I was talked into a mudhole the other day by a group of friends, so raised the lexus up and went in, 4 hi and cdl on. I got stuck and started spinning a good deal. I tried all i could to get out. On my last attempt to get out i heard a terrible pop and everything started to grind. I lost power to the wheels then it like jumped back into gear, but with a terrible grinding sound. I ended up having my brother pull me out with his ecoboost on mudgraps. Anyways it will still go into gear and reverse and 4lo still works also. But there is still a terrible grinding sound coming from the front end. Its sitting at a shop now waiting to get looked at, im scared i've blow the front dif. It couldn't be my transmission could it? My parents refuse to help me so im on my own dime and a bit scared of what the shop is gonna tell me.

Search Front diff, you very likely just grenaded it. At least $2K, unless you can find a MUD member that is upgrading and can help you out with used gears/maybe complete diff, depending. Good luck

Alright, my mechanic just called and said he wont be able to look at it till tomorrow. Fingers crossed its not a complete disaster. If yall know of anyone who will have parts or a diff please let me know!

2000, ya i have a job but 9$/hr is gonna be a long time to fix this. How much money if it definitely is the front diff will i be looking at?

I had quotes all over the place. Cheapest quote I got was around $2,200 with ARB locker. The dealer I sold it too went with a OEM Assembly which ended up being a tad over $3,000.

You only have to work 333 hours to fix it!

Whew thats expensive, looks like ill be working for a long while till i get back offroad. An arb locker up front would be nice though. Would it be worth the extra money to go ahead and put one in while im gonna have the diff open? I plan on keeping this car as long as possible

$1500 if you loose the fear and get your hands greasy! $2500+ if you pay a shop to do it!
Replacing a diff is an easy job, challenging and tricky on the first try but not impossible. You should disconnect the front and drive rwd until able to do pull the trigger.

First things first, confirm it is the differential. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

Have the shop remove the front diff, CV Axles, and the front drive shaft and save up for the ARB. In the long run it will pay for itself in terms of not breaking another front diff. Hit up http://www.car-part.com/ and start searching. LX or LC diffs will work. Just make sure it's 2000+ for the 4-pinion. I'm not saying it will cost you $2-3K. I'm just saying it can. Search for used first. Get your own credit card. Pay 50% in cash and pay off the rest over time.

I have a front diff with 4.30s. Everything is in good condition just upgraded to 4.88s and arb. Let me know is your interested. It is the 4 pinion also. Let me know

@2000UZJ Well, he started with I may loose my xl. I guess he was already over the edge! ;)
@sailor95 Like Nick said, have them check and remove the front if confirmed, but be sure to look at the parts and keep your stuff wile driving around in rwd! You never know what can happen if you leave stuff at the shop and who you can trust these days.

Did you trade in your truck with a blown front diff?

@mcgaskins , I did trade it in with a blown diff. It was disclosed before I sold it to them. I honestly lost interest in that rig. I had taken it too far and wheeled it too hard. 5 steering racks and now the front diff blowing up with more to fix down the line like a mystery cooling issue.

Figured I'd start over and not smash into every rock possible. I tried my best to keep it out of a MUD members hand but somehow a MUD member bought it

Good point! @benc I will know tomorrow what the damage is, If the front diff is it though. I am very interested! And Nicks idea about pulling the front drive shaft and CV axles has given me hope so i refuse to part with my LX. I really appreciate the quick responses everybody!
