First Blood

Well, the cruiser got me today. I was using a wire wheel on the grinder and a piece of the wire wheel flew off and embedded itself in my forehead. It hurt but I didn't even know it was still there until I looked in the mirror and it was sticking out of my head. Nice. I just had to laugh.

But on the good side, the floorboards are almost all ground down and derustified and ready for a por patch. It won't be pretty, but it will stop the rust, noise, and cold until I figure out this welding thing! Tomorrow I try Por-15 for the first time. I sure hope it gets a little warmer.

YOU GO, GIRL!

Heather, please wear safety glasses. Last February I had a wire embedded in my eye using a wheel. COST: $350.00 days lost of work and more pain than I care to remember.

A guy working for me had that happen once. He was off work on Friday afternoon. He left it until Monday hoping to claim it on workman's comp. Lost his eye. Most of us only have two to start with, one gone is bad.
Safety glasses are a must when grinding, banging or torching. Eye protection at least when working overhead (like up under a truck). I can't remember if you wear glasses. You can get prescription safety glasses for about what regular ones cost I think.

I am one of the fortunate ones that doesn't need glasses. However, I have certified safety glasses in both the non-tinted and tinted varieties. My work takes me to oil refineries a lot and those folks are SERIOUS about safety. In all seriousness, I have developed some good habits from working in the petroleum industry.

Floorboard Repair

So this is what I am up against on the floorboards. The PO thought that it would be a good idea to epoxy the rotting weld along the back seat platform. Not so much. Water got trapped under that stuff and it just kept on rusting...all the way through. And, it seeped out the sides to rot the door frame and contribute to the rocker panel issues along the back fender.

Anyway, like I said, this is about stopping the bleeding for now, not a long term fix. I am going to grind down and por-15 the entire area, use their fiberglass mesh and putty to fill in and build up what I need to, then call it a day (or a week...which is how long I think this will take me).

After some grinding and wire wheeling:

One question. The rockers are in good shape except just at the end by the back fender. How do I paint inside the rocker to get the rust inhibitor up in there? I thought about a pom-pom on a stick and just shoving it through? Anyone do this before without a spray gun?

Somehow I just knew the beast would draw blood. It's sort of an official
bonding process. Welcome newly annointed Cruiserhead.
I guessed we had budding Cruiser Goddess in our midst. It's official now.
Ohm....cruiser,cruiser,cruiser....Ohm

I still like the idea of cutting a channel up the entire length of the rocker, treating it, then welding in steel to bottle it back up, with drainage slits.
