I don't have any CV boots!

I may be a newbie panicing. I just started a service regime on my recently acquired '97 LC. Changed oil to Mobil 1, replaced PS fluid that was dirty then on to check the CV boots. I don't have any! There are no CV boots on the front - I can see all of that shinny ball joint and the front axel is smothered in grease! What do I do. I can buy the boots buy do I need do a complete front axel rebuild - and I was just off on vacation! My chilton manual says nothing on this. I need buy a factory manual and a bunch of stuff from Cruiser Dan I suppose.

I'd take it back and tell them its defective!!! Tell them you wanted your father's Oldsmobile.

Inside that shiny ball is a nifty little item called a birfield joint. Do a search for birfield and you'll find out all about it. Servicing that steering knuckle assembly is considered a tedious task...you'll need several parts and tools before you proceed so unless you want some down time waiting on parts...don't go out and tear into it tonight. Instead...have a

Tomorrow, when you are sober, you'll realize its Sunday and Dan is closed. But once you get that FSM, you'll be busy for weeks.

Oh great, I'll bet your muffler bearings need replacing, and they probably let the flux capacitor discharge, big money to replace that!

To Ben's post I'd add it would be wise to check the level of your headlight oil. Without that barrier, moisture may build up in them and cause problems.

Please be gentle with me. It's the Chilton manual (now in trash) that should be flamed. It clearly states to check and replace "CV boots" and "Birfield" is not mentioned anywhere in the whole book. Anyway, thanks for the good news.

We tend to give newbies a tough time, no worries though. If you hang around long enough you will be amazed at how much you will learn.

I wish mine had boots. It would probably keep the birfield in better shape.
