no worries about mud getting into the engine . just wash it off. But i cut out only the outer few inches of the inner fender. all the gains are in cutting out the outer few inches as thats the part of the fender that hangs down.

and on the rear fender i didnt cut the fender at all of the forward part of the fender. I cut only the rear part of fender. but if u do that u will need to extend the rear arms a bit (sleeve em).

Metaltech style is great but there is also one little problem...you can't ever remove the outer fender again with out cutting where you welded it to the inner fender. The outer fender bolts into the body with at least nine bolts after the inner fender is cut, and that is more than enough support for me.

Just so everybody is clear, the MetalTech Fender Cut does NOT weld the inner fender to the outer fender! You can still remove the outer fender just like you did before.

Sorry for assuming about what I saw from the pics creeper...so is it bolted or what? It looked welded...

Sorry,

I'm not a fan of chopping up perfectly good $heet metal.

Good work (and thanks for the compliments ). But don't even consider 37's - you didn't need to cut anything material to run them.

Get those 38's on there :bounce:

Excellent point Nay. I'm going with a bias ply because I don't run the vehicle over about 50mph here and I will be trailing a lot in dirt and mud. The 13/38-16 TSL looks good as well as the 38.5x11.00-16 bogger. I like how tall, skinny, and light the bogger is (38.0" x 11.8" with a tread width of 9.2" weighing in at only 69lbs) and might just go that route. I will also be mud dragging with these tires and a wild card that would only be my trail tire could be a 12.4-16 bridgestone farm service lug tractor tire (37.6" x 12.6" no listed tread width and weighing 66lbs). It is the most popular tire on the trails and at the drag because the cops don't care if you run them on the street here, and they go for about $215 a piece.

I live on an Air Force base and if the AF cops got wind that I was running illegal tires as my DD tires I wouldn't have them on for long. That is why they would have to be on a seperate set of rims. A local trailing friend of mine has a set of 6x5.5 16x10 Mickey Thompson classic II's with 4 7/16" backspacing he would let go for $400. The :princess: drives the vehicle during the day so I could leave the 305's on the stock rims and run the tractors on the 16x10's...decisions decisions...

Here's a SAS mini and 4runner...maybe I'll be next...we'll see:

That pic is great because everyone was setting up to watch the mud drag! It is an island favorite here in Guam...an all day event every 2-3 months :hillbilly:.

You could have run those skinny 38's without much trimming. Think 42's :D

Neither! We used that rubber edging on the modified inner fender. The inner fender was designed to make a good seal with the outer fender just by tention. The rubber keeps it from rattling. I hope that makes sense...

Now that's just CRAZY talk! :flipoff2: I ran 42" swampers on my 85' mini, That's a lot of MEAT! It was a Big difference between a 38" and 42".

Nay you make 42's sound so easy man :hmm:...What about the 39.5x13.50 Irok's? Can I stick a tire that has a cross section width of 15.00" on an 8" rim? I know it can be done, but I guess it depends on the tire shop...Oh what a slippery slope!

heya- has anyone considered putting a 1 or 2 " lift on their rear fenderwells -----ie. chopping the interior wells and raising them a few inches to allow you to clearance the exterior more?

HEY Nay-----> would 38.5 x 10.9" skinny michelin xls or xzls fit on 2" of lift if the rears were trimmed up even with the inner stock wells? Where in the rear would the major rubbing be on say - no lift if it was trimmed to the max? (outer/inner/upper/etc)

It makes perfect sense creeper. You guys left that little detail out in both of your write-ups...or I just didn't catch it. I shouldn't have assumed. Creeper those are 37x14.00-17's on 17x8's correct? I'm gonna want 5.29s with 39.5's. I was trying to keep it to a skinny 38" that was light so I could run around with the stock 4.10's for a while. But like I mentioned in the recent retread thread, for the next year and a half my max speed limit is 45mph, and that puts gearing in a little different perspective than most folks, at least when were talking about the road. How bad would 39.5's be on 4.10's though? Like I said I only can max out at 45-50mph anyways? I know off the beaten path is a different animal and that gears equal control etc, but this whole thing is a journey, I'm not Warren Buffett or Bill Gates, and gears are later on the trailmap of this journey after bigger tires and then a rear aussie locker. So what are the opinions on 39.5's and 4.10's ? 1FZ-FE not 3-FE...;)

It is wild what size tires can be put on a 80 with a mild amount of lift if your willing to do a little nip tuck on your truck!
