Hi all,

Im taking my pop-top HZJ78 on a pan-americas trip at the moment, got a bit of an issue i was hoping your expertise could help me with!

When driving, for a while now, I get what feels like the clutch slipping, intermittently, especially towrds the end of longer drives.
I thought this was the clutch, but 500 miles or so ago, my gearbox went completely, lost drive in all gears but 4th. have since discovered that this is a common enough problem with the 151 gearbox they put in the 78s around 2001. I got a full rebuild, which cost a fortune, but had no choice to keep the trip going. Got a new HD clutch put in at the same time.

After the rebuild, the box feels good, but i am still getting the same issue. if anything, it is slowly getting worse over time. Thought it was the clutch before, but this is obviously now not the case.

I dont think there is any blockages in the fuel lines, but it does feel like the engine is not getting fuel through.

Happens intermittently and in all gears (although usually 4th and 5th) lasts only 1-2 second, looses all power, but then kicks in again.

Im hoping its not the injection pump, as after paying out for a full gearbox rebuild, i cant really afford to have the pump rebuilt too without seriously shortening the trip!

any help, or ideas of what to check would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

I would be checking the pick up in the tank, Water filter on chassis rail if it has one and the screen filter where the fuel line plugs into the IP.
Any of the above could cause your fuel starvation problem at high revs but it still could be the IP lift pump failing.
Check the cheap stuff first also you may have picked up a fuel bug blocking the fuel lines pull the drain plug and drop a few liters into a bucket and have a look for growth light brown s*** that looks like fluff or long black stringy tar like stuff.
Good luck.
